Remember the days, not so long ago, when our local phone company was actually a local phone company. Take a look at this old commercial. It seems inconceivable, at a time when Aliant’s claim to fame is being “an innovator and pacesetter in the sector” that the lyrics of their jingle once contained the words “in a place where there are friends you trust and neighbours who care” and “sharing the all the pride we feel in living here.”

Wow. Watching that commercial made me wonder if being part of the Aliant machine is really worth it? I know the company I used to work with used to get a lot of work from Island Tel….now most of it has gone to Nova Scotia. It’s too bad.

I remember those days as an
I remember those days as an employee of Island Tel. I have 30 years, and boy would I ever love to be Island Tel again. Then you were an employee with a name, now you are an employee with a number. Although we are now Aliant (merger June 1999), I still like to serve my customers honestly, truthfully, caringly, and I take pride in what I do. I will always view the customer as number one in my books. These are the people who really pay my paycheque, without the customer there would be no company. I always try to help the customer no matter what there problem and if I’m not sure how to fix it, I make sure I get there name and phone number, get the answer and call them back.

How wonderful to again see that old advertisement. I would love to see more of them as they tie in so nicely with what I am doing with my collection, the Telephone Museum of PEI and the Telephone on PEI web site! There is no question, some of the down home character has been lost with the larger Aliant and now Bell Aliant.
