Charlottetown Parking Meters

If you walk the streets of Charlottetown every day like we do, you can’t help but notice the continuing parking meter carnage downtown. On Prince St. alone, on the stretch in front of our house, there are more destroyed parking meters than working ones. And by “destroyed” I mean “the entire top part has been lopped off.”

Concomitant with this destruction, the City appears to be amidst an analog to digital upgrade program, as witnessed by the following photos taken on Queen Street this afternoon.

Here’s a shot of the old analog meters:

And here’s a shot of the whizzy new digital ones:

Apparently the old meters are really easy to break. I’ve been told that a well placed (I won’t say where) fleshy part of the palm will knock the top right off. The money inside is safe, but someone enjoys free parking until the meter is replaced.

I was wondering why so many meters were topless.
Thats a lot of vandalism.

The safe is always easily accessiable with the ole fashioned magent..Back in my hay day a few friends would go around doing this..Except instead of palms, they would use work boots..Those new meters however are tanks, good luck getting those things open..I applaud the city for doing this as the meter also says ‘OFF’ after 4pm so unsuspecting tourists do not waste their money..
