I’m an American living in Vancouver, BC. I heard your show; and I’d care to point out that Americans take themselves far too seriously - stand-up comedy notwithstanding. Your show is a healthy attempt towards getting all of us - politicians and citizens, corporate CEO’s and proletariats alike - to laugh at ourselves. The problem of heavy serious is like a cancer infecting the American polis.
I’m writing an essay on the theme of laughter appropos Fredrich Nietzsche’s philosophy. He writes:
“To laugh at oneself as one would have to laugh in order to laugh out the whole truth - to do that even the best so far lacked sufficient sense for the truth, and the most gifted had too little genius for that. Even laughter may yet have a future” (The Gay Science 1).
Right on! Maybe NPR will start up something - even faintly resembling the comedy of the world.
