CIBC Aerogold VISA + Travel Medical Insurance

Peter Rukavina

If you hold CIBC Aerogold VISA, you can get emergency travel medical insurance for an addition fee of $122/year for a family of 3 (this example assumes that your family of 3 includes me, Catherine and Oliver: your mileage may vary, depending on your age). This covers you for multiple trips of up to 15 days, with additional top-up days available for $5.13/day.

However, CIBC also offers the CIBC Club Privileges Travel program, which costs $199/year, and includes family emergency travel medical insurance for multiple trips of up to 7 days, with the top-up amount the same $5.13/day. However this program also includes priority boarding, lounge access, and a yearly free companion ticket.

Depending on your travel patterns, this second program might end up being a better deal. It was for me.

I don’t know what the statistics are, but I imagine many people travel without insurance (many people probably have it included in their work health plan, I imagine). I’ve heard enough “if I didn’t have that insurance I would have had a $50,000 hospital bill” stories from travelers to the U.S. to invest in it every time I go out of the country. Thanks to brother Johnny, I remembered to do so for a trip coming up later this week.

I was just wondering if you actually received your CIBC Club Privileges Travel package. I ordered mine over a month ago, and it has yet to arrive….

I recieved a letter and Air Canada Companion Certificate from Ernie Johannson, CIBC Card Products Division Vice President. I would like to ensure that he recieves this e-mail. I phoned Air Canada, as the letter and certificate advised and was told that I would have to pay full fare for the first ticket in order to get the Companion offer on certificate # CIC*160/121. The fll fare to Tampa Florida for one person is $2,902.00 plus taxes for the two tickets even though one was “FREE”. When I asked what the cost would be if I paid for 2 tickets I was told that I could purchase two tickets on the same flight for $1,076.00.
Therefore it would cost me an extra $1,046.00 to use your one free ticket to anywhere Air Canada Flies.
I am very upset and angry at the special offer that you sent to me. The last line of the letter says ” It’s one more way the CIBC Aerogold VISA card helps you go further faster “. I am sorry to say that I believe it is one more way that CIBC VISA has of making there customers fell like idiots.
Please have Ernie Johannson contact me before March 31, 2005 when the Certificate expires.
Best regards.

Dear Ms. Johannson
Both my wife Isabel and I received our “Air Canada Maple Leaf Club Cards” a short time ago and enjoy using them as we have for the last 25 years. Previously as members through Diners/Maple Leaf Club Card.
We have a few comments to make with respect to your change from “companion ticket” last year to 500 Aeroplan points this yesr but would prefer to send them to you by regular letter. Kindly let us have your mailing address.

Thank you
