Country Canada

It strikes me as odd that there is seen to be demand in Canada for a television channel with a Saturday night schedule that goes like this:

6:00Country Canada
6:30On the Road Again
7:00Features/Docs

8:00Twin Peaks

9:00Saturday Movie

11:00Harrowsmith
Country Life

Perhaps I underestimate the tastes of rural Canada. Anything to save us from Hockey Night in Canada can’t be all that bad, I suppose.

Obviously there’s not a demand for that type of content from a national public broadcaster.
I think what you call ‘demand’, I call ‘fear’, and the fear is fear that if our national public broadcaster disappears, then so goes our national identity.
The content of the national public broadcaster is pretty much irrelevant, in my opinion. We just want it to ‘be there’. We don’t necessarily acknowledge it’s worth anymore, yet we need it to be there.
The CBC is to Canada as the worn, comfy blanket is to the 3 year old child. He may not sleep with the blanket anymore, but he’s happy knowing the blanket is on the dresser.
Unfortunately, the CBC is one bloated, expensive blanket.

Certainly CBC radio has managed to carve out a much more relevant niche for itself than CBC television has.
