Businesses we Support

I’ve added a new Businesses we Support page to the website. It contains a list of reliable local businesses with good customer service that we do business with on a regular basis. I’ll add to it (and subtract from it, if required) over the days and weeks to come. You’ll find a handy link over to the left in the sidebar under We Support.

Will this page also take suggestions? I would like to point you in the direction of the new Reading Well, which has finally found its home and is pleasant to visit, with a mind bogglingly helpful staff.
And let me put in a good word for the downtown Home Hardware. The selection may not be as extensive as other stores…but, if you need a kettle, you can get one — and, again, the staff are very, very helpful.
And, almost unbelievably, I would like to add a bank to this list. I am not a fan of
Big Banks…but I must say that the people at Scotiabank on the corner of Grafton and University go out of their way to make what is always an unpleasant experience as easy and fun as it possibly can be. There’s a nice, small town feel to the service — and that’s really all I ask.

Good call, Ann and Peter.

I’ve already stated how impressed I am with That’s Entertainment as a video store.

And for groceries, The Clover Farm in Brighton (affectionately known as Norm’s) never disappoints.

Working as I do on University Avenue, I miss the good folks at Little Christo’s.

are you gonna start a “business we don’t support” list too? i think focusing on the positive is good. and as a jejeune retailer i forgive more of my fellow service and retail folks than i ever did. i have to say i’m still excited about simple good service from someone who knows the product they’re selling.

A “business we don’t support” would be more difficult to balance and a target for complaint against Peter for setting it up — but I’d love to see it done right. Maybe an annual bricks and bouquets style one. That being said, absence from the list can speak loudly. Tragically absent is the Harp and Thistle — an absence tanatmount to a crime against curry. Did you know he brought in a Roti-King brand Chapati maker? Surely the only one on the Island and, I wager, much of Northern Nova Scotia and South East New Brunswick as well! Interestingly absent is the Root Celler under new management.

The Coast in Halifax did a best of list that was really useful. To that end, where is the best diner? I am a Maid Marion’s person myself while in PEI (Spartan/Ardmore in Halifax) but secretly wished I could become accepted as a Lorne’s of North Rustico guy. Opens for the fishermen heading out, I think — early anyway. Gotta smoke export A unfiltered and have a capacity for 12 coffees a morning. Had a scallop bun there last winter. Pretty damn good for something in a white bun and ketchup on the side.
