Guava

Peter Rukavina

Let this note act as a formal declaration in favour of the guava. Not only do guavas make excellent juice (available on PEI at Sobey’s in the ‘Natural’ section for $2.99/litre), but saying the word guava is lots of fun. Try it: guava, guava, guava.

I do not like guava. I wish to alert the readership that fondness for guava is not a human universal. Either that, or somebody is lying.

I drink fresh made guava juice (ba la ge) everyday. I still haven’t quite figured out how to tell when the fruit is perfectly ripe. When ripe it has a wonderful texture and taste. When not so ripe it tastes much like soap.

Hmmm. Maybe that’s my problem—unripe guavas. But I also don’t like that goopy Kern’s brand guava juice that’s full of corn syrup.

Does anyone know where to buy fresh sweet guava? It’s never in local markets here in the Mid-Atlantic. I’ll ship it from wherever - desperate. Thanks!

I think Guava juice is the greaest thing since toilet. It should labeled as a staple when grocery shopping…

I heard that guavas are the most nutritious fruit in existence, outstripping even that King of Fruits, the Watermelon. So I impetuously purchased a guava without thinking the issue through from all angles. What part of the guava, for example, should one eat? I decided to eat the whole thing. Skin, flesh, seeds and all. I will report the results of my culinary experiment in due course, God willing.
