Report from the Coast

Peter Rukavina

So we decided to brave the roads south of Barcelona and have been touring since Friday evening. Our base has been the excellent Hotel Victoria in Segur de Calafell, a nice older place where we are, I think, the only guests. Yesterday we drove high into the hills and ate bread and cheese halfway up a mountain at a small rest stop with ornately tiled fountain. Does it get better than that? Later in the day we came back to sea level and Oliver swan in the ocean. Today we head back to take another stab at Barcelona.

Hi Peter - Chris Corrigan posted this comment on my site after I mentioned that you had introduced me to blogging
Rob

Hey Rob:
Peter and I worked in community radio in Peterborough in the late 80s - early 90s.

Once the station magamer at Trent Radio told my wife, Caitlin Frost, that Peter invented the Internet. I suspect he was talking about the station’s internal disc library database, but it sounds good to me, and it fits the guy:

“Peter Rukavina: Inventor of the Internet”

Say hi to him for me.

Same family, Justin, and the actual story of Gortex is quite amazing. The moment was a “eureka!” type thing (If I’ve heard the story correctly). Actually it’s more of a discovery than an invention.

For years polymers were extracted by having two chemicals (usually liquids) in close contact while -slowly- removing the material forming along the contact surface.

Gortex was something that would not form if pulled slowly but when in frustration (Al’s grandpa I presume) yanked at a piece of this putty-like substance — well, he discovered that a quick pull worked when a slow draw wouldn’t.

If he’d been a more patient man Al Gore wouldn’t have become president… oh, yeah, well, wouldn’t have had the money to become president :-)
