Some helpful advice from the postmistress at the Charlottetown Post Office this morning. If you have standard stamps, which right now are $1.44 singly or $1.24 in books, these can be used like this:
- Mailing a standard letter in Canada takes one.
- Mailing a standard letter to the USA takes two.
- Mailing a standard letter internationally takes three.
Using this mnemonic means you’ll overpay for the letter to the USA (by 73 cents), but having a way to remember the postage without thinking about it is worth that to me.

It was not until recently…
It was not until recently that I realized this about International postage - I had purchased International stamps instead but used only infrequently to send to UK relative. And if the rate increased had to add another value. The extra bonus for me is that I have *stock* of P stamps from prior years (and prior prices) . Though I do purchase some *new* stamps now and then if they appeal to me for some special occasion, my stock mainly came from years ago when Rexall Drugs had them on sale (at the counter, not their PO) for I believe 15% off, so I bought then. Price was probably before the last big increase before this one so a good investment. I believe Costco also sells stamps at a discount (I have not done this) but possibly only rolls of 100. And of course when you buy at discount, the tax is reduced as well.
