Sundae

Peter Rukavina

At the dairy bar last night after supper:

“I’d like peanut butter ice cream with chocolate and toffee sauce, please,” I ordered.

“Do you want just the ice cream with those sauces, or do you want a sundae?”, the clerk replied.

“What’s the difference?”, I asked.

“I don’t really know,” the clerk answered.

The best ice cream-related exchange of the summer.

It’s been decades since I ever had one or cared, but for me a sundae implies whipped cream and a cherry on top. I would go so far as to say whatever you top with whipped cream and then a cherry—in that order—is thereby made a sundae: A lasagna sundae, a burrito sundae, a Chevy Nova sundae. The only exception is sliced bananas with ice cream, because then you’d have a banana split.

What's The Scoop (great name) in Montague (and Stratford location also) have a Rhubarb Crisp Sundae. Was there Tuesday evening and it is my new favorite.
