How to add your PEI Vax Pass to your Apple Wallet

With the release of iOS 15.1 today, you can now add your PEI Vax Pass to the Wallet app on your iPhone for easy access. As it’s not immediately obvious how to do this, here’s how:

  1. From the My COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination page, get a copy of your PEI Vax Pass QR code and make a screen shot of it, saving the screen shot to Photos.

  2. In the Photos app, open the screen shot, tap on the “recognize text” icon in the bottom right, and then tap on the QR code: you should see a “Open in Health” option pop up. Tap that.

  3. Your vaccination record will be added to the Health App, and to your Apple Wallet.

That’s it.

Now when you need to show your PEI Vax Pass, double-tap on the home button to open your Wallet: it will be right there with any other credit cards, tickets, etc. you’ve added.

(from a helpful pointer from DNA Lounge—this all works because PEI, like many jurisdictions, is using the SMART Health standard for QR codes)

Good hack. My preference is to screencapture and save the proof of vaccine or QR code in photos with a “Vax” label. A photo of my driver’s license similarly labelled is added. I do the same with my spouse’s pass and license as she frequently is with me when I enter the spaces that require proof of vaccine etc. Very handy when she has left her ID in the car… other purse etc. This occurred several times in Halifax this past weekend. To access these items I simply open “Photos” and enter “Vax” in the search box. As our photos are synced she has the same Vax photo file on her phone.

I tried this yesterday (using the camera app pointed at the PDF open on another device) and it wouldn’t work. Tried your method and still won’t work. The camera app doesn’t seem to like / recognize the QR code (it recognizes the text around it but not the code). 🤷🏼‍♂️

Did you upgrade to iOS 15.1 first?

Yes, 15.1 here.

Yep. 15.1

I wonder if there’s something subtly “off” with the QR code?

I had the same outcome as Dave.

Another option is just to take a photo of the printed QR code, which might work better?

I brought the VaxPass up on another computer and was able to do the 5.1 import on both my phone and my wife's by pointing the camera at the PDF image on the screen of my laptop. The Mac system was smart enough to only put on my phone my version of the QR coded document in the Health app and the Wallet. I have both documents saved to Google Drive as well so if only one phone is available we can present both documents.

Thank you for that. It worked for me by following your suggestion.

I printed my proof of vaccination, paper clipped it to my ID and put it in my wallet.

Upgrading to the most recent iOS seemed to do the trick.

My first attempt didn't work. I zoomed in on the QR code on the website so that it occupied about 1/3 of my screen and took another screenshot, and then following Peter's instructions worked like a charm. Thanks as always, Peter, for the many and varied public services you provide on your blog.

I had my first shot in Halifax on April 6.I had my second shot in Kensington on June 22. Neither PEI or Nova Scotia have combined the 2, and I can't get either pass. Can someone help?

Thanks Peter it worked. Didn’t need the record for recent travel but glad it is now in my wallet.
