Kerning Emergency

Little Black Dress is a delightful and progressive clothing store, and has newly opened a shop in Charlottetown on Great George Street. Please go and shop there.

The only fly in the ointment is their sign: simple, solid, and after my own heart, but for a botched kerning job.

It reminds me of a line of little kids waiting to go into a classroom, all jammed up at the front and straggling at the back. I always thought "Kerning for Dollars" could be a fun gameshow – Erik Spiekermann could host.

I take it Great Great Street is a typo. Though it would be a great name.

That would indeed be a Great Great name for a street. But alas was a typo.

There is a reason for the typo: this stretch of Great George Street (the actual name) used to be called University Avenue, but, I believe with an eye to tarting up the touristic attractiveness of the area, was renamed (joining the historic Great George Street that runs down to the water from the former end of University Avenue).

I’ve never completely accepted this renaming, and so when I was typing the name of the street yesterday, my mind must have shuddered a little, and typed Great Great.

Typo fixed ;-)

When I was a kid I believe from the Cenotaph to Euston St. was formerly Great George Street renamed as part of University Ave., from the University or thereabouts up to Euston St. was originally Elm Avenue. I delivered Guardians on Elm Ave. from Cudmore's Grocery/Seatreat corner to the DQ. The kerning is atrocious, good eye!
