Building Better Picnic Tables

I’ve always hated standard picnic tables: they’re hard to get in and out of, and uncomfortable to sit in.

Today I spotted this design, which seems to have a lot to recommend it.

I can't easily see how I would sit on this short sections. Side to the table? Legs spread real wide? Knees squished in? I have recently seen a new design at the campground around Ross Lane beach. It has the traditional benches but an extra length to the table for your condiments, jugs, serving dishes, etc. to sit on without interfering with the view of your friends across the way.

That’s a very good point. I was focused on the increased room available for wheelchairs, and didn’t notice that the short section seem too short to be usable to anyone. I will experiment and report back next time I’m there.

Well the gears are really turning now and I'm realizing the extra piece at the end of the table was to pull a wheelchair up to! Not for optimal condiment placement :)

The nearest of the short benches looks to overhang its supports more on the right than on the left, which makes me think the gap between its legs is for your left leg, and you're to plant your right leg outside of them on to the right.
