At Crafting {:} a Life we spoke often of blogging. And when one speaks of blogging these days, one must speak of email newsletters.
Here’s where I’ve arrived, after thinking about this for the last week:
Blogging is something we do together; email newsletters are something we do by ourselves.
Both together and by ourselves are relative terms, and there’s leakage in both directions. But, for me at least, that’s the essential difference.

I like that distinction, but
I like that distinction, but I'm sad to think this dichotomy might encompass all that's relevant online now. You made me remember back when I've subscribed to newsgroups/discussion groups (?)...which I'm sure you remember and know much better, but which I suppose first happened by email and later transitioned to online interfaces. Those really felt like a thing done together--more than my idea of blogging...FWIW. I know they still exist, but there are so many topics and for me they appeal less I think because of all-in-one social web thingies like especially Facebook.
