1-700-555-4141

I just stumbled across this telephone number — 1-700-555-4141 — tonight on the CRTC website. You phone it, and a recording tells you which telephone company is providing you with long distance service. Interestingly enough, the Aliant brandocrats haven’t extended their reach this far in the Aliantification of Island Tel: call the number above from PEI (assuming you haven’t jumped to another long distance provider) and you’ll still hear “Your provider of long distance service is Island Tel. Thank you for choosing us.”

So if I phone it and say “I’m Peter Rukavina. Who provides my long distance servive”…even if I’m not Peter…will they tell me?
The CRTC has a big database of all our long distance servers?
Doesn’t this bother anyone?

Phoning the number gets you connected to a robotic voice that automatically relays the long distance provider you’re using. You can do this from any line you have access to, of course. But I can’t get the information about you from my phone. The CRTC only mandates this line — as a consumer service — it doesn’t run it.

I just got a call from 1 700 199 6969 but I missed it. I called it back and it had a no dial tone, beep beep beep, off the hook tone.

Weird.

1-700 is an inter-company number. Wal-mart uses it for its stores. 1-700-901-#### (store number) allows the store to call any Wal-Mart for free.

Well… here’s my story.

A couple weeks ago, my spouse tried to call numerous times his mother in Quebec City. No answer. Not getting voice mail either. Worried that something happened to her, he tried his brother in the same city. Same thing! He then had the brilliance to call with his cell and got hold of both parties.

Then I call my phone provider last Thursday and they gave me the 1-700-555-4141 number. When I call, it rings without anyone picking up. So then, my provider says they will look into the mater…

Last Monday, I call again, and they stress they will call ME back when the matter is resolved…

I called again tonight because I need to get hold of them for holiday planning and it’s at that moment that they inform me that I have another provider for long distances. The thing is I pay a monthly plan with them for my long distance calls and this company is sister office of the corporation I work for.

This is a big surprise to me! I sure cannot figure out how to get this matter resolved. I

This is still occurring in 2011. My father had a long-distance package on his phone from Aliant (the account is in MY name). On Aug 31/2011 someone managed to cancel his package (according to Aliant) and he now gets an automated voice telling him to call 1(700)555-4141 every time he tries to make a long-distance call. Apparently, if he ignores it and remains on the line his call does go through. I just do not know who/how/how much he is now being charged for calls?

I am with Primus for long distant calls, but cannot fax anything as it then bills you with your telephone provider "Bell" and they charge a service charge besides the cost of the call because you don't have a long distance plan with them. Bad, bad business!! No benefit to having a long distance plan separate from your existing telephone provider?? Crazy world - all about $$$$$$$$$

Just happened to us. No answer at that number, just a beeping noise and a recorded voice saying, "1200." Yes, it's clear that the CRTC has some work to do.
