Gesticulating Wildly with the Premier

Peter Rukavina

Premier MacLauchlan has posted the video of our chat last week, part of his Island Entrepreneurs web series. I like the fact that YouTube’s automatically-generated thumbnail for the video is of me scratching my head.

Three comments:

1 Mr MacLauchlan comes across as very personable. The discussion has a pleasing warmth, and you seem to have a good connection. I'm a little envious of you, living, as you do, in PEI.

2 Audio quality in the video is lousy. I know, that basement room is reverberant. Next time, perhaps you should have a word with the premier about lavalier microphones.

3 The arm waving is fine -- don't worry about it.

We do have an amiable Premier, there’s no doubting that.

I agree completely. I was happier with my interview than with earlier ones in the series where the audio was almost inaudible. The Premier’s assistant uses an iPad with a simple external mic plugged into it. But it’s external only in the sense that it plugs into the iPad — it’s still 2 metres away from the people talking.

All that said, I also appreciate the rough-and-ready nature of the Premier’s series; there would be a danger, if it were more polished, that he’d end up traveling with a larger crew, which would include PR people and makeup artists and sound people and all of a sudden all the “just stopping by” qualities of the interview would be out the door.

Thank you for saying that.
