Google Earth Tilt

Peter Rukavina

In older versions of Google Earth there was a “horizontal slider” on the map that allowed you to vary the angle at which you were viewing the map — the “tilt” for lack of a better word. In recent versions this control has disappeared; after some digging in the help for the application, I found that to achieve the same thing you now simply hold Shift on your keyboard and drag the map with the mouse.

But there is indeed a much better and only slightly esoteric word than “tilt,” and it’s a great one: You’re talking about the azimuth of the map.

Thank you very much for the shift/slider tip. Having recently downloaded v5.0 I was having trouble viewing the topography from anything other than a ‘top-down’ view. Although in the ‘about’ guides posted online pertaining to Google Earth features/functions there is much deliberation on the ‘top-down’ and ‘tilt’ views I searched in vain to find instructions on the control of these functions. I concluded that it would be something so obvious that I should intuitively know.

Really Appreciate the post.

Thanks for the tip. I thought the tilt capability was gone with the new version, which Google has forced upon us all. (If you try to download an earlier version with the slider, e.g., from Oldversion.com, Google will automatically “upgrade” to the sliderless version.)
