Vogue Optical Commercial, Circa 2001

Once Saturday morning at the Charlottetown Farmers’ Market – I think it was the spring of 2001 – I was seconded by Perry Williams and Doug Millington to sing the Vogue Optical jingle as part of an advertising campaign for the company that Perry’s Virtual Studios was filming. This is the result. Oliver, needless to say, was younger then. And, for the record, the glasses I’m wearing in the commercial were from Boyles Optical.

Wow Peter. I hope Vogue Optical had a different jingle back then… one I’ve not heard in my five years on PEI.

Otherwise, I will be forced to conclude that carrying a melody is far, far from being one of your strengths. Not that you don’t have many other strengths.

Good on you for giving this a try, at any rate.

I imagine Vogue’s marketing director was trying for something folksy, and they must have instructed Peter suppress his awesome musicality for that session.

What seems off to me is the “2nd pair free” context: Like it’s a wish that your child grow up myopic, or implicitly using Oliver to elaborate the terms and/or spin the offer (Get free glasses for your kid while updating your own prescription!).
