Roland Tanglao has a business plan for the kind of coffee shop I’d love to be able to patronize. Among his points describing the BareBones concept, the ones I like most are:
- No WiFi, no internet no power outlets.
- No takeout, only coffee in “real” cups.
- No coffee cards, no promotions, no free coffee after buying 10.
I think Roland’s on to something here: in the future we’re going to seek out things that have fewer features not more.

I’ll implement this concept right now, you can come to my house and I’ll make you a cup of coffee and you can give me a dollar. I think paying the huge margins for coffee sort of depends on the ‘extras’, otherwise the emperor’s clothes start to fade away and we realize we can just make our own. This could work for other types of shops, though.

but as @al points out maybe it is crazy; i doubt it would make money but if i was wealthy i’d do it!
People used to go to coffee shops to be with other people. Maybe that’s less true these days than say in the 1920s in Vienna, but the draw used to have to do with community, fashion and atmosphere as well as coffee. So it’s not just about the coffee.
