Three years ago next week [[Oliver]] started out at the Child Development Centre at Holland College. He began with a tentative day-or-two a week, gradually accelerating across the hall from daycare to kindergarten. He’s starting Grade One next week and so yesterday was his last day in the now-familiar halls:
I can’t say enough good things about Kim and her staff at the Child Development Centre; they are a dedicated group of caring, insightful professionals (for the amount of good they do for the world they should be paid three times what they are). They took on Oliver and his delightful eccentricities with unflagging enthusiasm; our small family owes them a great debt for helping us help Oliver grow into the world.
If you are looking for a daycare or kindergarten in Charlottetown, I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending these folks; we’ll miss them all dearly.

That said, since the general opinion seems to be that it is the best day care in town, it can be hard to get into. We had our wee one on the waiting list pretty much as soon as he was born, and now, coming up on 2 years on, and thinking we’d be okay for a spot, there is, of course, no spot available. If we’d hassled them more this summer we probably would of been fine, there was some talk of having been called (we were not) to offer us a spot, so parents be warned, if you want in, calling regularly is probably required.

Sherwood Parkdale Headstart is also very, very good. Probably also a waiting list, but worth looking into.
Seems like waiting lists do
Seems like waiting lists do not really work. I had two bad experiences and would suggest parents get confirmation that their child is on the list (usually you pay a small fee) and calling back often, maybe even seeing the “list” to be sure your child’s name is on it.
and it’s never too soon to
and it’s never too soon to put your child on a waiting list for Kindergarden… last year my twins got the last two spots at a popular kindergarden for Fall 2011.
Waiting lists are not as
Waiting lists are not as simple as they appear. There are only so many openings per age and only so many chidren of each age that centres can accomondate. It has to do with ratios and such. Children of parents presently using the service are often given first priority over people who are on the waitlist. I do recommend checking in to see where you are on the waitlist. People do get called and if there is no answer or if a message that was left is not returned in a reasonable amount of time the person next on the list is contacted. Leaving an email address is another option as phone calls can be missed or numbers misdialed.
