No Bicycles on Charlottetown Buses

Peter Rukavina

I thought I might take my bike out to the Charlottetown Mall to catch a movie, and then ride the bus back. But a call to the transit operator reveals that they don’t permit bicycles on the buses, nor do they have any provision for transporting them otherwise. Which would seem to be a big hole in building a convenient intermodal transportation in the capital area.

My friend Oliver reports that bikes ride free on California buses.

In the end I left the bike at home. Caught the 6:11 p.m. in front of the Atlantic Technology Centre, got to the movie just as the trailers were starting at 6:30 p.m. The movie let out at 8:30 p.m. and I caught the 8:35 p.m. bus back downtown. Sometimes — rarely, but sometimes — the bus schedule is perfectly aligned with realistic needs.

I visited friends in Portland, Oregon about 10 years ago and I think that all of the city buses had bike racks on the front.
