The old AE 976 Anne of Green Gables license plate that saw us through a Ford F-100 pickup, a Nissan Sentra wagon, a Honda Civic, an Eagle Summit and a VW Jetta over 10 years got retired this morning, replaced with a new La province verte du Canada model (I opted for the French model simply for solidarity’s sake):
Ironically, once mounted on the Jetta under the plastic Sherwood Volkswagen holder the slogan and the website address are covered; I have to get some shorter bolts before I can rectify that.

you’re not going to throw the Anne of Green Gable’s one out are you ? - please stop ! - if you’re thinking about it - there’s a home for it in Copenhagen together with the rest of my north american license plates on my wall. It would by far be the most valuable license plate in the collection =)

Alas the old Anne plate had to be turned in to get the new windmill plate — otherwise I’d be out there with two plates in the wild and, Islanders being as Islander are, letting that happen to ensure that a lot of people simply slapped the old plate on another car.

Interesting. I have two consecutively-numbered Anne plates - one from a car I sold last winter, and one from the mandatory changeover upon renewal of my remaining vehicle last month. I have received no request to return either (and I have no plans to do so, as it appears they may eventually have some value). I renewed my registration online. Unfortunately, there was no place on the form for style of plate, and I just assumed I would get one from the current “Green” series, but I received instead one from their clearance bin of 1997-model “Confederation Bridge” series plates. The plate number begins with the letters “UK”, and I am fully expecting to have to explain to British ex-pats that I am not from the old country!

The Anne plates go for $20 in gift shops in Banff. They’re popular with the Japanese tourists. I’m not sure where the shops are getting their inventory.

In my case I believe it was the fact that I had a sticker on the plate still valid for another 9 months that sealed the deal.
