Amazing Race III

Peter Rukavina

Tonight was the season premiere of Amazing Race on CBS. It looks like it’s shaping up to be another barnburner of a race, and I will again have to contort my life to always be withing CBS range on Wednesday nights.

As you may recall, Rob and Brennan were winners of the last Amazing Race. What are they up to now? Well, here’s one recent event, from the official Rob and Brennan Website:

Brennan (along with Alex Boylan, co-winner of AR2) will attend Movieline Magazine’s Beauty on the Beach party to benefit Ted Danson’s American Oceans Campaign/Oceana and to celebrate the launch of the Mermaids for Clean Oceans campaign.
This all sounds frightfully like the “Homer Bowls a Perfect Game” episode of The Simpsons. I expect, if it hasn’t happened already, that Rob and Brennan will appear, along with Elmo and Miss Piggy, on The New Hollywood Squares soon. Give it a couple of years and they’ll be joining Kurt Browning on tour and appearing at the Civic Centre here in Charlottetown.

You’d think with $1 million, you’d be able to avoid the Ted Danson benefits, but I guess fame is addictive.

Stay tuned: Oswald and Danny’s website is coming soon.

I was going to watch this but saw that Band of Brothers on Global. It was the third episode and I was utterly transfixed. It was better than A Bridge Too Far in terms of grip. [I have a soft spot for A Bridge Too Far as Dad’s cousin was a character - Sean Connery’s aide and Liv Ulmann plays the grannie of soneone I went to highschool with - very real to me though I am sure Saving Private Ryan would be the more accurate comparison].

Anyway, there was a tank versus morter battle for about half an hour that was concluded by the arrival of the Sherman tanks that was just amazing. All I could think of was my articling principal, Mr. Walsh, who was a artillery man in France and Holland and had both howitzers to his sides take direct hits. Talk about Reality TV.

Perhaps Peter is facinated by The Amazing Race because he can observe and critique the customer service of airlines, trains, taxis, and various other services used by the contestants as they circle the globe. Imagine his delight if one episode (Leg #7 - Urtusk to PEI) involved a Road Block whereby one team member had to resolve an internet technical issue, given the choice of calling Aliant Support, or locating the server room and fixing it themselves. Would make great TV.
