Netscape vs. Internet Explorer

Although it’s a story that’s been examined a re-examined a million times, I find it interesting to note that in August of 1999 traffic to www.gov.pe.ca was 48% Netscape and 48% Internet Explorer. In August of 2000 it was 28% Netscape and 58% Internet Explorer and this past month it was 25% Netscape and 66% Internet Explorer.

In other words, in two short years, Netscape’s “market share” has gone down 23% and Internet Explorer’s has gone up 18%.

I just switched from a very loyal Netscape user since ver 2 to Internet Explorer because of all the problems with Netscape. Ver 4.7 crashed all the time, so I updated to 6.1B then 6.1. After loosing all my mail viewing. It was still there just wouldn’t show up in 6.1, I tried to contact Netscape. They wanted $30 to talk to me (remember my email didn’t work). I gave up and switched.
I have issues with IE, but at least it doesn’t crash all the time.

MSExplorer vs Netscape : Shocking performance test results.

From about June 2002 to January 2004, MS Explorer held a steady 95% of the internet browser market. As a software developer it therefore makes perfect sense to build and test our latest version of FileCourier (an online large file transfer service) for the explorer first and then test it on everything else later. We have just now gotten around to testing it with Netscape 7.1.

We were absolutely astonished to find that, everything else being equal, the pure HTTPS UPLOAD rate for Netscape 7.1 was literally 3x faster than explorer! The HTTPS download rates appear most equal but Netscape is still faster (Netscape is 10-20% better here as well).

I have am interested in finding out if anyone can explain this larger performance difference?
