Do I have USB 2.0 ports on my iMac?

Peter Rukavina

Can any of you solid Macheads out there tell me if the following screen snap from the Apple System Profiler tells me that my iMac has USB 2.0 ports?

Hi I’m an islander traped in Toronto :) Was just browsing PEI blogs and came across yours, thought I’d leave you a quick hello.

As for your mac question drop me a note with what kind of iMac it is (the old bubble shape ones, the lampshade, or the new iMac flatscreen)

Peter, if you want, I can identify it. I work for Apple via tech support at the moment and would be able to tell from the model # whether you do or not.

Actually, Peter, you have a USB 1.1 or low 2.0 port. The maximum transfer speed of 12Mbits/second indicates it’s not a high-powered USB 2.0 port.

I remember something about some Apple motherboards having USB 2.0 ports but Apple trying to pretend they weren’t there for a while, through drivers or firmware, or some such. But not sure if that was true of iMacs or iBooks or what..

Either way, as your machine is set up now, plugging in a USB device will only let you transfer at USB 1.1 speeds.

2.0 or 1.1 USB…i couldn’t find info on my iMac’s USB anywhere!! called 1800-my-apple…press two for support. get your serial # ready by clicking “about this Mac” then click on the “version 10.x.x” twice.

turns out i have a 1.1 USB…my iomega external HD is sooooo slow. will return it to get a HD with fire wire.
