Mary Lou Finlay to Retire

The CBC is reporting that Mary Lou Finlay is retiring as of November 30. Currently the host of the radio program As It Happens on CBC Radio One, Finlay is perhaps least well remembered for co-hosting The Journal with Barbara Frum starting in 1982.

The CBC Archives page on The Journal says that Finlay left the show after two years because producer Mark Starowicz “believed a 38-minute show was too short to justify two hosts.” I always thought she was the better of the two hosts, and I’ve always enjoyed her on As It Happens.

Here’s some audio to remember the good old days by.

I will miss the bright, warm voice that has brought me so many stories from Canada and the world. Like millions, I am priveledged to have felt I knew her and to have had her in my life, lo, these many years. When she and Barbra take vacations in the summer, we get a glimpse of what it would be like without them. It is not the same, but even they have grown into the spots left before them. Her feet are probably small, but she is leaving some damned big shoes. good luck to all of us and especially Mary Lou, I know I will forever miss her and look forward to any future work she might do.

Being a lover of radio and news I was saddened to read about the retirement of Mary Lou Finlay. I know this is very late entry but felt compelled to add my thoughts. I growing up in Gary, Indiana and as a young boy would scan my radio dial to listen to distant stations that is when I first came across Canadian radio. Who knew you were there certainly not the Midwest. However, one taste and I was hooked. I’ve listened to Radio Canada via short wave around the world and now living in North Carolina enjoy the use of internet broadcasting(much cleared but not as fun, no antenna to move around). The disappointing changes in TV journalism have made me search out my old friend radio. I saddened to hear that one of my favorite voices will not be here, of all the shows that I have listened to on Canadian radio As it Happens was my favorite. Thank you and good luck Mary Lou, and thank you Peter Rukavina.
