Charlottetown Full of Development

Peter Rukavina

Charlottetown is alive with the sound of jackhammers:

  • A new Home Hardware going up on the St. Peters Road, presumably the new location of the store currently in the Ellis Bros. shopping centre.
  • A new Bank of Nova Scotia going up next to Vogue Optical on St. Peters Road.
  • Renovations to the Parkdale Pharmacy.
  • The hill under Future Shop and across from Wal-mart is being carved out to make room for new Old Navy and Michaels Crafts stores.
  • Something’s happening in the vacant lot between Shaddy’s and the former Melons location on University Avenue — lots of dozing and digging.
  • The Mike’s location next to the Charlottetown Mall is closed for renovations.
  • The new Holland College residence on Grafton St. is nearing completion.
  • The new monster residence on the UPEI campus is stretching ever taller by the day.

I don’t think we’ve seen this much new construction since the Kirkwood fell to the wrecker’s ball ten years ago.

By the way, if you’re creative, rich and entrepreneurial, both the old YMCA and the Basilica Rec Centre are for sale.

You also forgot the new institute for nutri-science and health at the back of the UPEI campus and also I believe there is going to be an addition to the AVC.

And (though I’m not holding my breath) that wrteched toxic hole on University Avenue is supposed to be filled starting next month.

Ann: I have a eye-witness account of some progress at the wretched toxic hold on University Ave:

This morning, as I walked by, two men with a pick-up truck were unrolling large hoses next to the hole and inspecting nearby man-hole covers (perhaps as possible recepticles for the toxic liquid).

If the Martin Group has their way my backyard will become a major contruction site in the near future as they undertake to shoe-horn their mini-subdivision of 6 units into what is now a very green and tranquil space. I’ve been mentally preparing myself for a summer long cacophony of buzz saws, hammers, cement trucks, etc. If our new baby, due in June, can learn to sleep through that he/she should be “bomb proof” thereafter.

And lower Queen Street is to get a face lift soon as well so I hear, when they begin to jazz it up and bring “olde Charlottetown” back to the forefront. All the cables going under ground and new stone walkways will make for a mess of a good time.

and let’s not forget the hunk feast of the SOB’s washing and priming walls on Queen street… sad I missed that one, sad indeed.
