Kids on Bikes

Peter Rukavina

The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute has an interesting article about taking kids on bikes. I’d been thinking about finding a way for Oliver and I to ride together; the article was enough to make me wait until he can ride his own.

Isn’t that whole article about infants Peter? I think they mean children under 12 months. How old is Oliver now? I would think he’d be fine in a trailer.

It wasn’t so much the specifics of the article as it was the language like “when you crash” that chilled me.

They also suggested that any adult looking to put a child in a trailer experience sitting in a bike trailer themselves first: apparently it’s quite bumpy.

Those warnings are somewhat chilling. If my wife stumbles across this thread, our bike seat will be immediately thrown to the curb. However, I would like to point out that our front-mounted bike seat is very comfortable and well-balanced (and being uncommon, attracts a lot of attention and questions). I’ve never felt unsafe and we’ve never had anything even resembling a “close call”. My son enjoys holding the handle bars and switching gears on my command. It’s also great to have him right there in front of me where I can speak directly in his ear and point things out. He is rapidly approaching the upper limit of allowable weight/height for the seat. I will miss those rides when he outgrows them. He’ll be riding his own soon enough.
