How much does an election cost?

Using the information filed with Elections Canada, I created a simplified spreadsheet showing revenue and expenses for candidates in the 2006 Federal Election in the Charlottetown district. I omitted the Marijuana Party candidate, as they had neither revenue nor expenses. The bottom line is that, combined, candidates spent $135,162 on their campaigns. You can view the entire spreadsheet here.

Just goes to show that unfortunately it’s money that talks.

Interesting numbers and lower than I would have expected.

Jason, how do you draw that conclusion from this data?

I agree with Nathan. I also find it interesting that Baird Judson had a larger budget than either the NDP or Green Party. When you consider that Baird has been running in every election for as long as I can remember — well — as much as I disagree with his politics, don’t you think he deserves a medal or something. Interesting stuff! Thanks for putting it together.
