When was the Blizzard introduced in Canada?

Peter Rukavina

A reader, Heather, writing from Orilla, writes the following:

I would like to know when the “Blizzard” was introduced to Canada.

To which I replied:

Do you mean the tasty Dairy Queen ice cream treat, or the snowy conflagration?

To which she replied:

By “Blizzard” I meant the tasty Dairy Queen treat. The snowy conflagration was around long before Dairy Queen, I believe.

A quick call to Dairy Queen Canada in Burlington reveals the answer: the Blizzard was introduced to Canada in the spring of 1985.

Nutritional sidenote: a medium chocolate chip cookie dough Blizzard, according to this Dairy Queen chart, contains 950 calories, and 36 grams of fat. This might explain why when, in the midst of my gallbladder winter, having a Blizzard almost killed me. Another nutrional factoid: the Crispy Chicken Salad, which some might look to as a “healthy alternative,” contains 700 calories, and 51 grams of fat. Contrast this to the Grilled Chicken Salad, which has only 230 calories and 9 grams of fat. It’s all in the details.

I recall the Blizzard came in with a (insert storm referencing noun) of advertising back in ‘85. Had they used the current moron based ads, it wuold not have made it to ‘86.

Chicken skin is a killer.

I believe the Crispy Chicken Blizzard did in fact kill a few people back in ‘92 and was discontinued quickly..

A few weeks back while perusing the south end superstore here in HFX we picked up a box of Cap’N Crunch Limited Time Choco Donuts cereal which offered a coupon for a free Choco Donuts Blizzard! “That takes care of breakfast AND lunch” I thought to my self…

The cereal/blizzard weren’t awful..not exactly Milk Chocolate Flavoured as advertised…looking at the box I noticed that in the top right corner they still manage to insert a small picture of the Quaker reluctantly giving his approval.

On the topic of the blizzard idiots in the new commercial, after tag lines of “Yeah, They’re Thick” and “Yeah, They’re Back”…we are eagerly waiting for the “Yeah, They’re Dead” ad that has to be coming soon…
