Talk to Me of Mendocino

Karine Polwart’s lovely new album Still As Your Sleeping features a daring cover of Talk to Me of Mendocino. Daring because the Kate & Anna original is one of the greatest folk songs ever.

I warn you: listening to either the original or the cover may result in listening to both in rotation for hours and hours.

Wow! this is magnificent, Thank You. to pull such original rhythm & heart out of such a beloved gem (my own longtime favorite too) is no mean feat.
. . . + an ancillary treat thanks to your recommendation; stumbling uponline dear Linda Ronstadt joining Kate & Anna for a 3 part harmony rendition :)

Agreed thanks for sharing. Interesting original post and comment. I’m also a longtime fan of the McGarrigles and of this song and was going to point out my relatively recent discovery of the excellent Linda Ronstad collaborations/covers because for some weird music industry reason, Apple Music keeps making me re-add the McGarrigles to my library. I came to their music first through the music of Rufus and Martha Wainwright and seeing all of them perform over the years at the Calgary Folk Festival. Hoping the carefully social distanced Martha Wainwright show planned for November will still happen.

I can report that the Martha Wainwright concert/tour did happen. I saw a few nights ago in Calgary. She sang a wonderful cover of "Talk to Me of Mendochino." Her voice is rougher than the McGarrigles which gives it extra poignancy. Hearing her sing her mother's song with so much passion brings to mind one of my favourite singers, Catherine MacLellan and the how special her more mournful version of her dad's song "Snowbird" is to me as well.
