Slovakia Calling

Peter Rukavina

I just got a call from a woman named Zuzana in Kosice, Slovakia, confirming a hotel reservation (we’re booking into City Residence). It still amazes me that it’s possible to place trans-Atlantic telephone calls without operator intervention.

I used to live in Slovakia and Kosice is maybe the oddest town i’ve ever visited. It was built, legend has it, on billions of dollars of misappropriated funds from the ‘breakup’ following the velvet revolution. The local baron was responsible for handing over much of the Slovak infrastructure (including the soccer team I always heard) to the Czechs in return for kickbacks which he partially used for the amazingly silly downtown you’re about to see. I love Slovakia. It has everything. Amazing castles. Cool people. mysteries. and is on the end of every kind of political maneuvering that ever graced this planet.
