By all rights, Peter Pan shouldn’t exist. Like its independent burger-focused restaurant brothers and sisters, it should have been rendered extinct by the fast food giants. I am convinced that Peter Pan survives because (a) the famous Peter Pan Burger Basket $1.99 commercial which, like Stompin’ Tom singing the 1-800 tourism number, drilled its way into the public’s mind and (b) because the only effective way to refer to the intersection of Rte. 1 and Rte. 2 by the Charlottetown Mall is as “the Peter Pan corner.”
They also make a good milkshake. And there’s that special relish.

I, of the annekenstein blog which Mark questions, and to which Peter links, was once in a series of (local to PEI) television commercials advertising the Peter Pan burger basket at $1.99. These commercials were splendidly and effectively produced, on the cheap, complete with committed actors who portrayed various incarnations of the Peter Pan character, actively hocking the incredible dollar ninety-nine burger in a basket deal. Some of us may have made the choice to speak in a high-pitched squeal of a voice.
Despite (or perhaps because of) the low budget (we actors were paid only in Peter Pan coupons, I beleive) of the commercials, they struck a chord with this Island audience. Within, and for a long time after, the duration of their airing, I was, along with the other unfortunate actors who appeared in them, tormented and teased tirelessly. “Mocked” would be another word to describe the derision we received
This was probably about 10 years ago, and I believe they only aired for perhaps a couple of months. Yet, even today, I can still find myself in situations in which people, strangers, will comment on those ads.
It was a blog-post on The Annekenstein Monster, in which I detailed my latest Peter Pan encounter, to which Peter was referring.
Now, let us never speak of this again.
