I’m really happy with the way this sketch turned out: I think I’m finally starting to figure out how light and reflection works. I’m especially proud of the metal thingy at the end of the pencil.

The metal thingy of which you speak is called a ferrule.
I've just started watercolor
I've just started watercolor myself - a natural progression from pen and ink I guess. This is great, the like the 'metal thingy' - it does look like metal, awesome job. I also like the softness of the cast shadow...that's great! In fact, the colors are well chosen!
