Oscar Thoughts

Peter Rukavina

I’m not smart enough to figure out which films should win what. But I watched anyway, and had these thoughts:

  • I want to hire Morgan Freeman to narrate my life. Every day. You know, just like in The Shawshank Redemption.
  • Is Beyonce really that good that she needs to be called in for two three (!) songs? Aren’t there other singers out there?
  • I liked the “live from the seats” style of giving out selected awards (although there was that stunned looking guy on the lefthand side of the aisle who didn’t know what to make of it all). I liked it when the guy nominated for best short spelled out “I Love You” with his hands.
  • I didn’t like the “lets bring all the nominees on stage while we announce them” trick; it’s bad enough to lose without having to stand beside the winner. And they only did this for the “don’t really matter all that much” categories anyway.
  • I liked Chris Rock as host.
  • How do they do that magical “show video on little panels on the roof” thing? Neato.
  • Rene Zellweger was best dressed, hands down.

I thought renee zellwegger looked kind of sickly and weird.

I agree with you about the bringing the people up on the stage thing.

I too was puzzled by all the beyonc

I thought Chris Rock was really good, too. Renee zellwegger looked good - standing still. The world would be a better place if Antonio Banderas just never sang again, ever.

Chris Rock would have been good, if I could have heard him. The man needs to learn to speak up a bit. (Biting sarcasm does not translate well in this medium, I suppose. But damn, that man does NOT need to yell.)

I thought Renee was dressed well, but overall looked gaunt and ghastly, and the black hair has got to go. Renee, dear, you do not need to look more white than you already do. It worked on your old boyfriend, it does not work on you.

Beyonce X 3 was really just riding a pony till it gives out underneath you. Find a French singer to sing the song from Les Choristes, for God’s sake.

The Chris Rock short showed a real disconnect between what (primarily) black audiences are watching and what gets nominated at the Oscars. Anybody who points to the Oscars given to Halle, Jamie, Morgan, and Denzel as an argument that there’s no longer a colour barrier in Hollywood should be forced to write an essay about this disconnect.

Did anyone see Jon Stewart’s commentary on last night’s Daily Show? Hilarious… particularly the part about Puff Daddy/P. Diddy/who-the-heck-cares having to present an award to Polar Express. “The magic continues”
