"Oh, you're doing that social distancing thing?"

Peter Rukavina

Coming from a long line of well-informed rule followers, I was dutifully waiting my turn in the pasta aisle at Sobeys while the person in front of me did their spaghetti shopping. After two or three minutes they turned to me and said “Oh, you’re doing that social distancing thing?” and rolled on.

I'm a rule follower too. While at Shoppers Drugmart the other day, I informed a woman that she was coming the wrong way down the aisle as she approached me. She rolled her eyes, informed me that Covid-19 does not exist, and walked right past me. Unfortunately, not everyone is on board.

Despite being an anarchist and rule breaker, I am giving people their space and time. It's their space, not mine. They're welcome in my space if they feel safe being there. However, I'll wait for an invite to invade someone's individual and personal space. Seems fair. Seems like common sense.

To be honest, I had to laugh out loud. Though it is disturbing when you come across others who seem to be in denial.

A woman shouting into her phone while walking down my residential street was scheduling a manicure-pedicure for tomorrow.
