No Boots for You

Peter Rukavina

You can no longer purchase winter boots for children in downtown Charlottetown. Every last source is gone, and we’re left with Proude’s (not downtown, but at least not a branch of a Dallas-based conglomerate) and the chain stores at the mall.

The real reason Islanders shop in Moncton is that you cannot buy anything in season here — you have to buy summer clothes in the spring and winter clothes in the fall! It seems that re-ordering is often not a possibility, due to the long lead times of the suppliers in the garment trade, and the fact that a lot of clothing arrives via a slow boat from China or India. It’s especially difficult for consumers of children’s clothing, as you can’t stock up, as the child will outgrow them. Sometimes buyers anticipate the weather and get the right amount of the right type of clothing, but often they don’t.

You can, however, buy excellent boots for adults downtown.
In case you know any adult who needs them.
