iPod Photo

Peter Rukavina

The strangest thing about the new iPod Photo is that it is not a camera. I think a lot of people are going to assume that it is.

What I find strange is that they didn’t build in the ability for it to hook up to a camera by USB to transfer photos directly. Having to go through the CF reader accessory seems a bit unnecessary.

I think the strangest thing about it is that it costs 600US$. God! To have the kind of money to throw on something of no real value is amazing. I work with people who have a monthly salary of about that much.

That is expensive. But the average avid digital photo shooter is liable to have plunked down already at least that much for camera plus printer and paper. Plus I expect prints and printing are not so satisfying as viewing on the glowing display and based on experience I predict many shooters out there may be disappointed by how difficult it is to get people to sit down at your workstation while you stoop over them hitting the right arrow and saying “See that one? See that one?” So I am guessing there may be a lot of middle class men feeling already deeply invested who will see this device as “a way out” and perhaps they’ll think about giving one to grandma so she can look at those gazillions of shots of her grandkids without having to hold through and thumb a stack of paper prints with her arthritic fingers.

Hello Online Support iPod calls… I can imagine there will be quite the number of people wondering about it.. but I hope for the sake of the public’s money, that they are smart enough to notice that is is not a camera before buying it..

It’s an amazing little piece of machine though.. an iPod is an iPod, is and iPod, so it’s naturally fab.
