Final Coffee

A tall black coffee cup sits on a cluttered kitchen table.

“Do you need coffee in the morning?”, he asked.

“Yes,” I replied, with some urgency.

“Do you take anything in it?”, he asked.

“No,” I answered.

“Ok. Get up at 6:00 and have a cup of coffee, but don’t eat anything. Then stand by for a phone call.”

Instructions both for awaiting notification from the Nobel committee and from same-day surgery scheduling.
