There is a new type of knapsack here in Ontario. It has only one strap, and is worn diagonally across the back. It is all the rage. I’ve seen it sold in Indigo as a “yoga pack” but also in Old Navy as a knapsack. Those wishing to stay hip should be alert. Also note that among the young rebel types, “kangaroo sweatshirts” are back in style.

12 years or so ago, while at law school, there was an important and vibrant debate on what I believe you are calling the Kangaroo. I called it a “hooded sweatshirt” or just a “hood” - not very imaginative, especially for a Maritimer. Ontarians called it the “kangaroo” - more interesting but I did not really get the image. My roommate from Saskatchewan had the best name - the “bunny hug”. So now we are bunny hug wearers.
I have always heard such
I have always heard such sweatshirts referred to as a “hoody”, and they have never, in my lifetime, been out of style. In fact, I’m wearing one as I type.
“Hoodies” are kangaroo
“Hoodies” are kangaroo sweatshirts.
You are a cool five years off on the one-strapped backpack call as well.
Better luck next time.
I can confirm that saskers
I can confirm that saskers refer to such garments as a bunny hug…I’ve even seen this term used in official polcie news releases describing suspects.

My roommate from Unity used to delight in the blame of all crime upon “drifters” and also the Sask. term for the town dump: “nuisance grounds”.
I have never heard the term
I have never heard the term “kangaroo sweatshirt” either, we always just call them hoodies. All the “punk/ska” crowd kids sport them, as it’s a big thing for such bands to sell them at their shows.
I call ‘em Kangaroos.
