And 18 years later, I self-host a Matrix server in Docker containers which allows for private, encrypted chat between all members of my household on almost any current device. Voice and video calls, too.

The capabilities that used to be part of the network are migrating steadily to the endpoints, with the network being mostly reduced to moving packets around. I like it. =)
