CBC in Jeopardy

Peter Rukavina

When I saw this article in the Globe and Mail about how the U.S. imports Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune are running in the fall 2008 CBC Television line-up I thought it must be a misprint. Or a joke. But apparently it isn’t. I wonder what part of distinctive programming of the highest quality this falls under.

Haven’t you heard? The CBC isn’t a producer of unique ‘Canadian’ (whatever that is) programming any more. It’s main function now is to make money. It can do this either by wheeling and dealing, through real estate, or by competing for audience share. Jeez, you are so 1995 dude!

I’d still rather watch Jeopardy than those snot-nosed over-eager brats on Reach for the Top on CLT.

That said, a quiz show would be an easy thing for CBC to produce, and if they can keep down the needlessly canadian nonsense it could be a good source of programming hours. That would involve taking a risk though, so Im’ sure it won’t happen.
