Ask a Travel Agent

Peter Rukavina

Local travel agent George Stewart has agreed to answer questions about travel and the travel industry in a sort of “email interview” with me. Are there things you would like me to ask him? Add your questions to the end of this post, and I’ll organize them and pass them along.

I have no particular question for George, but I can confirm my absolute satisfaction with the service he has provided me. I just concluded a 36,000 Km (14 stop / transfer) journey which was arranged by George and the trip was flawless.

To my amazement, Air Canada service was friendly, professional and met my rather demanding requirements for service.

I may have to rethink my usual preference of avoiding Air Canada, due to their rude staff and unreliable service. Bankruptcy seems to suit them.

How are the taxes figured on international airfare? Is there a fixed rate of tax on a flight from the US to Switzerland and back?

I have a receipt that reads as follows:
fare BULK
tax/fee/charge 5 OOYC
tax/fee/charge 27 40US
total 38.38XT
BULK

What do these numbers mean? Are my total taxes on this ticket $38.38?

Thanks.

How early should I buy an international ticket to Australia for this summer? The prices seem to decrease as the time goes on.

Me and 10 other girls are planning on going to Cancun, Mexico either at the very end of may or in the beginning of June, for about a week. The limit all of us are willing to pay is $1250.00 for all inclusive. I was wondering if there was any deals or anything cheaper you could offer us. This is my first trip anywhere, so some advice on best deals, when to go, and where to go in Cancun would be more that appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I’m interested in getting married in the Cayman Islands sometime next year, however, my mother and grandmother have never flown before. Is it possible for them if they will not fly to get there by ship? Thanks for the help…

I am traveling to an all inclusive resort in the Mayan Riviera and would like to know what currency I should take and how much. I have heard everything from USD only, to Pesos and USD, to CAN only and then some have said don’t take any; use the ATM machines. I will be frequenting the Flea Markets and doing all of the tourist sites like: Xel-Ha, Xcaret, Coba, Chitchen Itza, Cozumel, Dos Ojos cenotes, and a trip into Cancun. I will be staying for two weeks with my husband and we are from Vancouver, BC. Thanks for your help!

My friend & I travel each year to all inclusives but it is a challenge to find a place that suits us. We are 2 females age 35 & would like to stay by the pool/ocean during the day - dine in more than 1 restaurant each day but would like a place that we are sure to be entertained during the day but also at night - ie bars discos etc - any good suggestions?

“Is it best to book a cruise as soon as they become available or wait until later when the dals come forth? Best to use a Travel Agent or go thru a discounter? What about going thru the Cruise line sites and their deals , after you register on their site?

Why are one way travel to Europe so expensive? Would I not be better to book a return ticket which costs far less? What happens if you do not show up for a return ticket on the date for return if you change your mind and want to stay later?

Thanks for your help.
