Tall Ship Chronicles

If you haven’t seen Tall Ship Chronicles on the Life Network, you really should tune in. Produced by Halifax-based Topsail Entertainment, the programme is 16-part documentary about the passage of the Barque Picton Castle around the world, from Lunenburg, NS, through the Panama Canal, the South Sea, Australia, South Africa and back to Lunenburg.

The show is hosted by Andrew Younghusband, actor and sometimes TV reporter; he is affable, an excellent narrator, and because he actually did the voyage as a bona fide crew member (which is the exception rather than the rule in “reality” television), is a compelling watch.

If you don’t pick up Life Network where you are, you can order the show on VHS from the Tall Ship Chronicles website

The Picton Castle was going down to the Caribbean in the storm during which Laura Gainey was sadly swept overboard. Apparently the ship was heading for the Bahamas to meet the schedule with an American t.v. company for filming on board a reality show similar to Tallship Chronicles. What was the t.c. company, was the show ever filmed, what was it called, does anyone have any copies? Or was it cancelled?

After searching for years a set of recordings has now been found.

* You’ll need uTorrent v. 1.8.3 (no earlier / later version is allowed) * Then create a free membership to TheEmpire.bz * Then login. * Then Browse (search) for “tallship chronicles” * Click on the link to download the torrent file for S01E01 — the first ep. * Then open this into uTorrent and wait. * The file will be downloaded onto your C: drive — probably within a few hours. * Once complete leave it seeding for others to share * Repeat for the other eps.

Enjoy.

I sailed on the Picton Castle during its second voyage when the TSC were filmed. Met my wife Annalisa (above) on board. Unfortunately, the living conditions were unnecessarily poor and generally unsafe, without even minimal or basic precautions. How sad about Laura Gainey. The part of the ship she fell off from is elevated and should be safe in most conditions. With hindsight being 20-20, she should have had a $15 strobe beacon and whistle around her neck, probably would have saved her. But, that is hindsight and although I was a longtime sailor, I chose not to wear one on board although I had one in my gear. My wife and I left in the Galapagos.
