Tim Hortons Responds

Regular readers will recall that I mentioned my surprise that a Tim Hortons Garden Vegetable Sandwich contains 23 g of fat.  I had been in the habit of ordering this sandwich as a “healthy alternative” without thinking about it (doesn’t garden vegetable sound healthly?).  I sent an email to Tim Hortons, and this is what they wrote me back:

Dear Mr. Rukavina,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding your concerns with the Tim Hortons Garden Vegetable Sandwich.

Tim Hortons has created a Nutrition Guide featuring a cross section of our products.  As you have recently viewed this guide electronically on our website, we hope that you have found the nutritional information useful in helping incorporate Tim Hortons products into your lifestyle.

The Garden Vegetable Sandwich is not advertised as a “healthy alternative” sandwich.  It is prepared with Plain Cream Cheese, Tim Hortons Special Dressing, Cucumber, Tomato and Lettuce.  The total fat content of this sandwich is 23 grams.  The areas of the sandwich in which the fat are located is as follows:

    Plain Cream Cheese, 13.0 grams
    Tims Special Dressing, 9.0 grams
    White Country Bun, 0.5 grams

To lower the total fat of this sandwich, request a sandwich with a Light Cream Cheese and no Tims Special Dressing.

Yours truly,
Consumer Nutrition Co-ordinator
Research & Development

That (a) Tim Hortons would respond at all, (b) they would take my request seriously, and (c) that they have a Consumer Nutrition Co-ordinator are all very heartening things.  Kudos to Tim’s for excellent service.

I have just started a search for a question I have about Tim Hortons so please bear with me.My understanding is that under the federal labor laws there is no laws stating that private sector employers I.E Tim Hortons, has to pay extra for holiday time worked.Every job I have ever held in the past 16 years(all private sector)has always had a holiday pay when you worked that day.I must also state that all these jobs are American based. Now here is the back storie.I live with my girlfriend and she works at Tim Hortons.I hear all the horror stories she comes home with after work. Her stories range from rude customers to ignorant managers and no breaks on to mysterious time loss and even favored employes who stand around and don’t do their work.I know that Tim’s is a Canadian based company, but the Wendy’s corperation(a American company)has purchased the U.S based franchises. My girlfriend states that they don’t do extra holiday pay cause they are a Canadian buisness and this explanation came from the store manager.SO HERE IS MY QUESTION.Why is it they feel they shouldn’t pay holiday’s,why does it feel like they observe Canadian holidays before U.S holidays. Why is it in every respect a American company except the roots, but they allways fall back on the Canadian excuse. Why do they not hire proper people for managment instead of those who have worked their for a long time,it just seems that they lack managment abilitys or is this just because of the way the buisness has to be ran.And is that to run there employes into the ground?

Backshift Slave's picture

Why is it they feel they shouldn’t pay holiday’s:
-They are not unionized, and they get away with it because the staff are afraid to speak up about it in fear of losing hours.

Why do they not hire proper people for managment instead of those who have worked their for a long time:
-They don’t have to pay them as much.

I have been stuck working backshift while going to University since the summer. I used to like going to work until I really saw what goes on. They pay me less than other people on backshift because they claim its only “temporary” (yeah, this was 5 months ago now). They pick favorites and deal with issues very unprofessionally (like cutting pay, adding shifts to peoples schedules without telling them). The management is shit, the owners are greedy (our store is opening christmas day), and overall there is no team effort.

I am a well educated woman, in my third year of university and headed to a career in human resources, and I get treated like I am stupid because I work at Tim Hortons to get by while getting my degree. I can not wait for the day that I finish my Bachelor and start working on my HR management certificate, so that I can approach the head office with some information on what is really going on.

dear confused: Why would you look for your answers on a web page that isn’t even actually dedicated to Tim Hortons, and is just a bunch of crazy people ranting about the most ridiculous things. Guess what everyone! If you want the exact kind of service you’re looking for…make your own food at home. Understand that when you eat out you always run the risk of it not going the way you’d like, because the people who serve you are usually rushed, stressed out, and mistakes are inevitably made. So either shut up and get over it, or eat at home. Very simple. It’s crazy to me that so many people spend this much time being concerned over the service you get during that 10 minutes you’re in the store. Who cares? All you can do is be nice and polite and hope you get the same in return, and if you don’t..once again I ask, who cares? It doesn’t actually affect your life in any way. But yeah, don’t work at Tim’s. You’ll spend your day dealing with idiots like the majority of people posting their complaints on this page.

I am a tim hrotons emplpyee, a teenager and I have to say this is not a fun thing to read. I work at a tim hortons about an hour and a half from Oshawa ( I work to save up for University so I don’t work in the P.S.S. my whole life and as well to help out my mom so she doesn’t have to buy me things.)
Tim hortons expects their employee’s to get the car out of the drivethrough in 23 seconds (the timer is at the window) But this is only realistic if coustomer is buying 2-3 coffee’s. We know people wait at the window for 2-3- minutes sometimes, maybe they should go inside to buy their 5,6,7,8 coffee’s!!!! Don’t buy 3 bagels and coffee’s for everyone via drivethrough. Think of it as an express lane, coffee’s and a bagel, muffin doughnut cookie whatever. Most people quit on short notice so maybe that’s why she was only taking one order at a time (all by herself in drivethrough) Happens to me sometimes but not at busy times. I work 4/5 nights in a week and both saturday and sunday at tim hortons, and we are not hungover (most of us) because we know we have to deal with btchs in the morning and might as well be sober or the day will be terrible. If you don’t like Tim Hortons service, why even waste your time?
p.s. this is for everyone complaining on this website, probably half are sitting in a tim hortons. Get off your lazy and politely ask the employee to fix your coffee if you are unsatisfied, WE WILL ALWAYS DO OUR BEST TO MAKE A COUSTOMER HAPPY!! Sitting behind a computer won’t fix a thing.
No one wants to work at a tim hrotns, we need the money. dont make our day worse than it has to be.
pce.

Hey there, I’m a baker at Tim Horton’s, and it’s not that bad…because I work the overnight. There is a supervisor who is scheduled for 92 hours per pay period (and works over this every single time), and we have some weird rule where we can’t be paid overtime over 88 hours, we have to take it in time off instead. One night the baker refused to come in, so this supervisor, who had worked 7-2 somewhere else, worked 3-11 and then 11-7. He is not getting paid for this.
I also hate that I am forced to pick up the slack for the baker before me. More than once I have come in and found almost nothing done. This means I have to stay late. I rarely leave on time, usually 30 minutes late, and I almost never take my break, because I don’t have time.
Please be patient with us. The overnight girl got one night of training. When you have been trapped in drive for 3 hours, and the cars won’t stop coming, you tend to get stressed and unhappy. I understand it isn’t your fault, however it’s hard to smile when you worked the overnight, went to school, and then went back to work 3-11 so that you could fill in for people who booked off. I’m sorry I don’t know how to make an ice capp mocha, this is my first time in front and I got put in drive thru and I have no drive thru experience. We don’t have donuts because other people buy them and the baker has to stop at 8. There is hardly any service 10-11 because there are two people in the store, and one of them is in drive and one is in front. That’s why we have nothing to eat.
Thank you.

Tim Hortons is a Canadian Company, publicly traded on the TSE and the NYSE and has been like that since 2006. From 1995 to 2006 it was owned by Wendys International who purchased it from co-founder Ron Joyce.
Not sure from your note if you are based in the U.S. or Canada, but regardless — each TH location pays based on the labour laws of the Province or State. If there is a question regarding pay, resolve it with the unit manager and if not resolved to your satisfaction take it up with the governing body

Just because the Tim Hortons you work for sucks doesn’t mean all Tim Hortons suck.

I love the one I work at, my co-workers are like family, servers, bakers, supervisors, managers, mornings, afternoons, & night team members. We all work together as a team and if we have a problem we work through it together. No back stabbing, rude comments. sure some people have a bad day but we recognize that when one employee is in a bad mood, everyone is in a bad mood. So we leave our personal issues with our street clothes. In uniform we remain professional, polite and helpful.

Most people that get angry at customer service workers usually think the same thing “HOW HARD COULD YOUR JOB BE?”

You know what I say to that “F@#% YOU!”.

I’ve volunteered as an Administrative Assistant, you know those desk/office jobs everyone hates. I did that for 3 years, 4 days a week, for 10 hours a day. There is NOTHING difficult about it, it takes common sense and organization, I also have friends in the factory business who push buttons all day and let machines do most of the work for them.

On the other hand I’ve worked at Tim Hortons as not only a server but a baker and I’m telling you there is NOTHING easy about the job. Tim Hortons employees constantly have countless amounts of rude customers looking down on them, as if they are no better than an stray cat.

If you get an order wrong there is no way a Tim Hortons employee will refuse to fix the mistake, even if you received the wrong order from a different store. They are trained to “Make it Right” in any circumstance. People need to educate themselves before they go bashing a franchise and if an employee is rude to you there is no harm in asking to speak to a team leader, chances are if that person was rude to you they’re rude to everyone and they don’t deserve to work there and they can easily be replaced with someone who will work hard to keep Tims’ reputation.

Tim Hortons employees shouldn’t be the only ones that are told to make it right, customers should too. So next time you get your order wrong be polite and let the worker know you understand people make mistakes. If you refuse to, I dare you to get a job at a fast food franchise and see how long it takes before you crack.

ARE YOU SERIOUS!?

You should practice what you preach youngin’. The way you wrote “where not the ones working at Tim Hortons” was like you were treating the staff members like lower class citizens. Maybe you have a thick accent and they cannot fully understand what you are saying. If they are grabbing the wrong item say something, don’t be rude about it.

I tavel around southern ontario daily and visit many Tims. What is it with the “I cant touch your Pay Pass Master Card when you pay”. First thing is if you had the pay pass touch box working there would not be a problem and very quick to pay. Dont get it. This card I have DOES NOT HAVE A PIN NUMBER with the Chip so all you have to do it push it in and hit ok, then hand it back with the receipt. Why do 50% of the Tims do that and Wendys and many other fast drive throughs. What is the real Policy. Its getting very annoying to the point I will stop going there.
Thanks

The problem with cards in general, and Tim Cards in particular, that customers have accused cashiers of swapping the card for one with less money, or otherwise trying to cheat. If the card does not leave the customer’s possession at all, he cannot claim that he was cheated. It’s unfortunate, but this has happened to me personally. Thank heavens for video cameras; it proved that I had not swapped the card.

I work at Tim Hortons and the Tim Hortons company was re purchased by TDL Canada in late 2007 so the company is again Canadian. That being said Tim Hortons has it’s own ethics board and it’s own governing laws and thus only has to follow he provincial/state laws about payment for holidays worked. I’ve worked for two different Tim Hortons and one payed me for holidays I worked the other refuses stating that it is not mandatory. Also if you look at who is generally in management and supervisor rolls most of them are young, generally between 16 and 22, so unfortunately it stands to reason that they wouldn’t care about questions or even fair treatment of employees. That being said if you do ask anything of the ethics board be certain to call and not do it online as even if you state you want to be anonymous and give them the names of people you do not want to know about tour enquiry they will find out. Over the phone you can ask your question and not have to start a file or anything which in my experience has been much safer.

Re your comments about holiday pay.
Most Tim Hortons are independantly owned, in effect small private businesses. TDL has an HR dept. that provides the resources such as the govt. requirements, etc. However, it is up to the business owner to research and abide by the federal and provincial laws regarding employees. If you are unsure whether you are being paid correctly, you should research your province’s employement standards yourself, which are available on the internet.

I am writing to inform you that I have seen first hand that two particular managers at 401 Simcoe Street in Tillsonburg like to pick cups and bags and such, up off of the floor and continue to use them for customers, in order to save paper costs. I feel this is wrong to serve the customers in such  a manner, and it is unfortunate that I am no longer a customer of theirs. Others will follow if word gets out.

The spoon used to stir the coffee is kept in an ice water that is changed every 2 hours or sooner if ice has melted or any hint of cloudiness. The purpose of this water is that most bacteria can not multiply in hot as well as COLD temperatures, therefore it is a method to prevent bacteria from forming NOT cause it. The ice water also helps remove cream/milk/sugar/etc. that might be left on the spoon to prevent flavour transfer. Travel mugs are NOT meant to be stirred with this spoon. Tim Hortons employees are all instructed to stir travel mugs with a straw or stir stick as well as thoroughly rinse customer travel mugs and wash their hands thoroughly after handling, for their own safety as well as other customers, being so concerned about the contamination that could occur allowing this “outside” item. For this same reason, they are not permitted to accept garbage or any other items through the drivethru window.

I do believe Tim Horton’s being as busy as they are could look into other avenues if they want to contribute to the greener earth. Make one line coffee only. I know most of us are in a hurry in the morning and are aggravated by those ordering food. Also, could we be a little less winded on the speaker. I don’t care who is serving me. Multiply this by the number of stores and figure out how many MILLIONS of unused empty cups get thrown out in the garbage every day.

Now check out their website to see how much they CLAIM to care about the earth and its environment, and producing less garbage.

Unbelievable
Please coomplain to their head office to stop this insanity.

I agree. I’ve been working there for 4 years, and I am still considered “casual part time”. I worked 35-40 hours a week, EVERY week last summer. I worked more hours than the “official” full time employees. They were absolutely shocked that I was getting 40 hours a week. And yet I was being paid the same as newcomers of 2 weeks. The managers pick favourites, and they only give you a raise if they like you, no matter how good you are at your job. I’ve asked for a raise many times, since I know how to do everything and watched the training videos 3 times over. I haven’t got any. They lie and cheat you out of your well earned money, and refuse to pay overtime on holidays (they actually only will give holiday pay two days out of the entire year) they don’t have to give, but should. The “no tipping policy” is absolutely repulsive to me. If a customer wants to give ME money, that is the customer’s choice. That is NOT the company’s money. It is mine, which I earned for giving awesome customer service.

The work is easy, sure, but after a while, you just want to bash your head against the wall, escpecially after 4 years of it.

My rant is done. : )

sry for the split post … when i brought up the roomer that the store manager was haveing a affair withe a married employee who was recently promoted not that she didnt deserve it but it seemed as if some other workers that have been there longer and work harder and actually show up on time were skiped now i only brought this up to them bc it was creating tension b/n the staff and the 2 people that were allegedly havein a affair would scream and argue with each other like a frustrated married couple right in front of customers ! it was embarrassing and made customers leave soon as i fished my pice a girl walked in to interview for MY SHIFTS ! Then the owner stuck his hand out to shake mine and said thank you but we no longer need your services .. i was shocked ……. thats not even getting into how horibble the food quality was its a good thing i took pics :) expired food food that sat out for well over 8 houers bugs! after my first day there i called friends an fam demanding they only get food from me

I sincerely apologize for the bad experience you have had a Tim Hortons.  If a problem occurs like this again, you should contact the store manager immeadiately so the situation and the employees can be taken care of promptly to make sure this does not happen again.  I’m a shift supervisor at a Tim Hortons in the United States and I am inspired by this experience and I will make sure no one on my shift is rude to any customers.

Loyal customers and new customers are the reason we work here; they pay our paychecks and it is our responsibility to make sure their experience is the best it can be.  We aren’t doing our jobs correctly if we are rude, irresponsible or causing problems with our customers.  Thank you for bringing your experience to my attention and I hope that your experiences with Tim Hortons get better in the future.
