Tim Hortons Responds

Regular readers will recall that I mentioned my surprise that a Tim Hortons Garden Vegetable Sandwich contains 23 g of fat.  I had been in the habit of ordering this sandwich as a “healthy alternative” without thinking about it (doesn’t garden vegetable sound healthly?).  I sent an email to Tim Hortons, and this is what they wrote me back:

Dear Mr. Rukavina,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding your concerns with the Tim Hortons Garden Vegetable Sandwich.

Tim Hortons has created a Nutrition Guide featuring a cross section of our products.  As you have recently viewed this guide electronically on our website, we hope that you have found the nutritional information useful in helping incorporate Tim Hortons products into your lifestyle.

The Garden Vegetable Sandwich is not advertised as a “healthy alternative” sandwich.  It is prepared with Plain Cream Cheese, Tim Hortons Special Dressing, Cucumber, Tomato and Lettuce.  The total fat content of this sandwich is 23 grams.  The areas of the sandwich in which the fat are located is as follows:

    Plain Cream Cheese, 13.0 grams
    Tims Special Dressing, 9.0 grams
    White Country Bun, 0.5 grams

To lower the total fat of this sandwich, request a sandwich with a Light Cream Cheese and no Tims Special Dressing.

Yours truly,
Consumer Nutrition Co-ordinator
Research & Development

That (a) Tim Hortons would respond at all, (b) they would take my request seriously, and (c) that they have a Consumer Nutrition Co-ordinator are all very heartening things.  Kudos to Tim’s for excellent service.

I just have to say that the store at Dixie and Midway really needs to get people on the drive thru that you can understand. It is a difficult area due to being across from the Airport there is a lot of plane noise but is is hard for the customer when the person on the drive thru says something to you and you cannot understand them.

I have stood in innumerable line-ups at Tims stores all over the contry, and have never once heard any kind of abuse of a staff member by a customer. I would just like to say to those employees who are posting here that 95% of customers are abusive and don’t treat them with respect, that based on your rants here, it’s very likely that the customers are responding to your very negative, and probably unhelpful, attitude. Try smiling ahd doing your best to get their coffee the way they like it, and you’ll get it down to the 5% of jerks that everyone has to deal with. And remember that if the customers stop coming to your store, you won’t have a job at all.

I was just on the site www.thetdlgroupltd.com and after reading all these comments and going on the site I can tell you for sure that I will never enter a Tim Hortons again. This is just terrible what is happening and to think that store owners invest a half a million dollars to get nothing in return for their investment. I think the employees should go on this site and then they may realize that the store owners do not make any money and they have to put on a face like they are loving what they do. It is a most interesting read and everyone on here should check it out.

This site was shut down and relaunched again as www.thetdlgroupltd.com and it tells the same story after the company shut the original site down. We live in a free society and if people cannot tell their story then I have a huge problem with that. I will not be entering a Tim’s again, I hope all who are on this page go and see what is happening.

Go check out the sites www.thetdlgroupltd.com and www.timhortonslies.wordpress.c… and read what this company is all about. Former franchisees who lost their life savings owning this franchise are exposing the truth about the “earnings” and to show what lengths this company will go to, to protect what it has been doing for many years to owners of their stores.

As for if you can get hired at 14, I don’t know, how about applying and talking to a Tim Hortons manager instead of sitting on your ass at home staring at a computer screen for hours, as you said you were doing.

AGREED! I work on drive thru at a location off of the highway and it ticks me off when regulars come into the drive thru with large sandwiches for their family with drinks and donuts and then have people lined up down the road who just want a coffee. It slows everyone down and we end up getting yelled at for it by customers and our bosses for not meeting drive thru times. :(

Old Schooled? Excuse me? “The customer is always right”, doesn’t apply these days? I’ve noticed a swing in the attitude of most, not all, Tim Horton’s workers, recently. Getting more and more rude. I’m sorry, but, Service, is still service, and, “Timmie’s” is lacking severely. And, the management of each store, seems to be turning a blind eye to this. What happened to being told to have a good day, as you’re getting your coffee? Or, the serving staff saying please and/or thank you? What happened to general good manners at Tim’s? I’ve noticed that you signed this comment, “Team Leader”. Why? Come forward, and let it be known who you are. But, I can bank on it, that you won’t. Because, if the owner of the store you work in, ever caught wind of this comment, your butt would be very sore, as it bounced off the curb, and you started pounding the pavement looking for a new job. And, for what it’s worth to you, or anyone. We are, as consumers, paying roughly, 950% of what it costs Tim’s to be producing that cup of coffee. So, please, don’t insult ou collective intelligence with that crap, that Tim’s is a business. And, only out to be making money. This IS, and has been quite obvious for years. The purpose of a promotion, (such as Roll up the rim), is to bring in new clientele. Not, chase off the old!

I deal with multiple stores, not just one. And, it’s the same story in each. The consumer no longer seems to matter. Only the cash in their hand. Just because a worker is having a bad day, or didn’t get laid the night before, or Whatever the excuse, does not give them the right to be rude to the person that is attached to the hand, that’s forking over the money, that’s keeping them in a job, and in most cases, supporting, at least in part, their family, or bad habits. And, lord forbid a customer should ever say “Thank-You”, or “Have a good day”… You’re looked at with total disgust. I have been dealing, exclusively, with Tim Horton’s for over 30 years. I’m about ready to start dealing with Starbucks, (A place that I’ve always looked at with disgust). At least I expect to be treated like trash, there.

As far as the big Tim’s mug refills goes. You pay a good buck for those things. And, a cup, (even a contest cups), doesn’t cost all that much. Less than a penny a piece. Public relations wise, it seems like a good investment to offer two cups with a Big Tim’s refill. Three with a Tim’s thermos, etc.. It’s only one month a year. And, most people that own those things, don’t have them refilled on a daily basis. They’re used mostly at home, if they’re used at all. I’ve had three of them, and I’ve never had one refilled. Nor have I ever seen anyone have one refilled. Tim Horton’s needs to get their greedy little heads out of their Butts, and start acting like a genuine Canadian Company again, or there’s going to be a lot more people dealing with Starbucks, (An American Company), and the likes, and no-one dealing with Tim’s. From where I stand, at the moment, there is no difference.

Well, they don’t send them baked. They send them to Tim Hortons as a frozen batter, they pour it in the muffin sheets, add what they need to add, then throw them in the oven. So they’re still fresh after the oven because the batter itself also has a shelf life. If they don’t taste fresh, it’s probably because the muffin is close to the expiry shelf, or they hadn’t had time (or I admit, in a couple stores may not care according to some people) to make more. They usually sell out too fast for that though.

TimmiesServer91's picture

I agree with what was said earlier. It is “Old-school” now. Sometimes the customer is right, such as there’s too little or too much cream/sugar in the coffee. The Ice Capp is too runny. Is there a fresh doughnut, this one tastes stale. If we can do something to fix it, we will do it, as a server at Timmies I promise I would. But if the customer doesn’t treat US right, I will sometimes return the favor and greet the next customer with a sincere smile and respect as I do all of my customers. We’re paid to work, not be abused. I could go on and on about customers that I can’t believe are allowed to walk the streets. Threatening employees for asking if they’d like a muffin/cookie/doughnut, or Christmas eve when the store is closing early (yes, they have lives) and the drive-thru is blocked off and the customers drive OVER the curb around the blockade, past the speaker and start BANGING on the window and yelling at employees for being closed? We don’t decide when to close, when to be open, and what our rules are.

In regards to the CUPS, we are not about to give you 6 cups for one thermos. If that’s the only reason you wanted the thermos, just buy that many coffees! They may be a bit cheap, but we’d be losing a lot of money if we did that for everyone. And losing more if one of those cups were a car or if (by some strange odds) you won all those as coffees. One coffee = one cup, despite the size. If you want it double cupped, the rules are the second cup must be a brown normal one.

I don’t understand why people complain about the cups… if they don’t like it, or if they have such bad experiences (where are these stores??? In all my life I’ve never seen one! I’m curious so *I* can give them a piece of my mind!), then go somewhere else. I’m sure McDonald’s is used to the abuse.

TimmiesServer91's picture

I wouldn’t complain to Tim Horton’s about that — we complain about the same thing.
If it’s 1-2 bagels or a sandwich, we can do it within 2 minutes easily. It’s when we ask if there’s anything else, they say no, drive up to the window, then decide “Oh, can we have 4 more bagels and a Ham and Swiss sandwich please?”. That’s what holds it up. And it’s happened MANY times. Problem is, if we ask them to pull forward to help everyone else (Double double, large regular, small black) they sometimes refuse. We can’t force them to pull forward no matter how many times we ask, and that’s what often slows it down.

wow, I honestly thought it was only McDonalds who did the “If there’s time to lean, there’s time to clean.” thing. Or more specifically, the thing of a certain manager.

We also get the “A clean bartowel is a happy bartowel.”

As a matter of interest, I see Tim Hortons employees go through the McDonalds drivethru all the time, being just as rude as they are saying about their customers. Being a fast food employee and a moral person I treat everyone with respect, and if something comes out incorrectly either when I’m working or purchasing I fix it, or politely ask if I could get it done properly. I’m not attempting to be rude, however, I’m just a picky eater. I would prefer my sandwich prepared the way I like it, and if extra charge applies or an extended wait time, sobeit. At least I’ll have what I prefer at the end of it.

I received three thankyous from customers in the drivethru over a three hour period. I said thankyou, have a great day to every single one. The customers may not be the greatest, but sometimes we aren’t either.

Nobody is wrong or right here, it’s just the way things go. We’re all human, and yes I will try my best to get your order accurate and delivered in a speedy fashion. Please respect me if I take a bit longer than the target time.

Both serving coffee and donuts and being a janitor/housekeeper fall under the ‘Service Industry’ catagory, and a lot of the Tim Horton employees here are complaining how they are treated because of the type of job they do… much like your comment about being a janitor or housekeeper. I work as a janitor/housekeeper and I am always hearing comments about people who do that type of work, like it is only for losers and high school dropouts that can’t get a ‘real’ job. Why don’t you worry about something that actually matters, you big baby? Oh no the minimum wage slave behind the counter helping me feed my caffeine addiction won’t break corporate policy to let me waste four cups to find out I didn’t win anything when I fill up my thermos with coffee I’m too lazy to make myself, the world is going to end! I think the one who needs to get their whiny, entitled head out of their butt is you. Guess what, Tim Horton’s is a corporation. A big, filthy, greedy multinational corporation. They’re pretty damn far removed from what they started as, so if you actually want to support something Canadian you’d better find a locally owned coffee shop (if any still exist) to get your fix at or stop whining when you’re directly supporting the beast. Do you think supporting STARBUCKS of all things will help the problem? You’re more daft than I thought.

This is what happens when you let a corporation take over a market. Lower quality of service, shrinking sizes, lower quality.

The rims sometimes get caught on the metal holding them into the cup dispenser and it pulls them up a bit. I actually had a lady complain that we rolled up her rim and she demanded a different cup. We gave her one, and as per company policy, we rolled up the rim on the one she refused. Yeah, it was a winning cup for an iPod. Back to corporate it went.

I just wanted to say that after reading page one of these posts, I was inspired to go out to Tims for a coffee and a snack. Even when the young gentleman behind the counter informed me that they did not have English Toffee Capuccino, Blueberry or Sesame bagels, I unlike Betty Yager, realized it had nothing to do with this young man and I kept a smile on my face and said “I’ll take whatever kind of capuccino and bagel you do have” and proceeded to make conversation. The young man was kind, courteous and pleasant and recieved the same respect from me, because after all folks, it’s only coffee and a snack. Thank you for sharing your information. I for one, will think twice next time I feel the urge to take my lifes stress out on somebody who is only doing their job.

I used to work at a Tim Hortons here in moncton. there were 2 days where I was so sick to the point where I couldnt even Talk. During these 2 days, I was schedualed to work, and due to the fact that I couldnt even talk, I couldnt call in. My room mates at the time were gone on vecation at the time, and my boss, didnt even consider calling me to check to see if I was still a live. Instead, she filled out the papers, saying I had QUIT rathur than comferming with me. When I finally had the energy and was able to talk. I had called, and talked with the head manager. She had told me that she thought I had quit and had already filled out the papers.

When I asked to go back, She said no, That there were apparently too much wright ups against me. I than shot back at her, that One of the Other girls…she had Way more right ups than me, and she was even rude to customers, and ignored her job 90 percent of the time, and that she was allowed to go back 4 more times before she left for good. I also shot back at her, that I was one of the 3 who worked up to 7 days a week, knew how to do every single position in the store, usually pulled a couple doubles a week and a few tripples a month. She still said no.

I tried for a different tim hortons in the city and they said they cant take me back because I had those wright ups, even though the previous tim hortons had made alot of compliments towards me.

Not even a year after, everyone I worked with, had left, and now they have pretty much a completly new staff, who all DO NOT smile, or even polite for that matter.

‘course there some what friendly with a vary limited amout of the regulars, but you would think that a place like Tim Hortons, Were its sapopse to be a happy frendly environment, would go from loosing all its good staff, who smiled, and laughed with eachother AND the customers, to having grumpy b**chy staff.

Yes, Tim’s is likely a shitty place to work — no money, customers stupid enough to drink the crap that passes for coffee there, and a company ‘no tipping’ policy that is as offensive to me, the customer as it must be for employees.

i do like how you worded this for the most part. “the customer is always right” isn’t necessarily old schooled though. i apply this rule at work whenever possible. but as you said too, there are certain rules that we just can’t bend on.

as for the “please” and “thank you”…i am a firm believer in politeness. when training a new employee i always emphasis how important it is to use manners. and i am especially fond of apologies too (ie: if we don’t hear a customer correctly over the headset or need to interupt them to find out more for their sandwich order). i am sorry that you all are having such bad experiences at the tim hortons near you, but please don’t rule them out completely. not all stores are the same…it all depends on the owners and staff of each one.

Holy run-on sentence Batman! Care to put some punctuation in there to make it easier to read?
Anyway, I totally understand about poor service, as does every customer in the history of take out.
It sucks to be treated like crap. Some people hate their job and treat people badly (either intentionally or unintentionally). The fact is, people in the food industry are often treated poorly by both management and customers. They’re poorly paid (minimum wage: the lowest wage allowed by law) and looked down on by most people for having an undesirable career. In spite of this, it is an employee’s job to treat customers with respect regardless of these unfortunate circumstances. If they hate their job, it is up to them to find a job they like.
As long as you are willing to go to a fast food chain, you’ll occasionally be treated poorly. The best way to deal with it is to complain to the store manager.

I have worked at 3 different Tim Hortons and I must say it’s all the time. Not only was there constant lack of staff, not to mention breaks but the managers we all terrible. When I worked overnights and the other worker called in sick I was alone working drive thru and counter. Illegal much? I always found that the managers didn’t really care about any of the staff all they wanted was the job done and it didn’t matter how. I severely burned my hand on the tea water and was told to finish my shift. The conditions in all three environments were terrible and I will/have not suggested this job to anyone.

By the way, I find it to be quite rude when I ordered my tea and was told that it was I’m not supposed to put milk and sugar into and then have the staff refuse to make it. It’s my tea, I shall drink it how I like it. I guess that’s why I don’t go to Tim Hortons anymore.

So on a staff and costumer stand point, Tim Hortons is terrible.

Anyone can survive working at Tim Hortons. It depends on the position as well as the volume of the store you’re looking into getting hired at. If you plan to really focus on this job (even if it is a starter job) it will teach you people skills, as well as how to multitask, how to operate under pressure, and if you are a pessimist, how cruel and selfish human kind is.

Firstly, i would just like to say that i love tim hortons coffee and their goodies, and especially when i wake up and i got to go to work, i always** wake up a little early just so that i can come grab a coffe and a breakfast sandwich, BUT what makes me love Tims more is knowing i go to work with a nice fresh cup and sum grub to eat,.. but i cant stress enough that it just defeats the purpose of me even bothering to go to any tim hortons location-When you think your going to get a nice cup of coffee, but then it just tastes like WATER.. or its the small things to me that count, i always ask for some bbq sauce in my sandwich, and i hardly ever get it in my sandwich..or best of all..i pay for extra creamcheese in my bagel and i get like half a spread. I think the issue here is COMMUNICATION _ between the customer speaking to the box, and the order taker,… but if i may add- i know usualy theres 2-3 people working drivethru in the AM.. IF the SANDWICH maker is wearing a headset like the other window and cashier drivethru employees are…why is it such a problem to not get what is ordered? I knoe some customers might have noisy cars, noisy people in the car, which makes it harder for the employee to comprehend and order what was said..but again, key issue is communication and its so annoying beacuse IF that employee wasted just as much time for her/him to welcome me to timhortons drive thru AND pronounce their name…id rather have them re-pronounce my order, cuz the last thing i care about before i leave is that i got everything i ordered, not someones name.. cuz if i needed to know it, id ask. i can name 4 locations in my town that have lost their timmie touch let me tell yah.. so seriosly please help these individuals who need to make it more clear and staff communication is a must..let your employees know- NOT TO GUESS if i said butter or cream cheese.. its just annoying. have them start to repeat the order back to the customer.. most locations dont anymore. .. they just say: DRIVE UP. oh and do some tests on your employees once and a while, this woman had no idea tim hortons had “bbq sauce as she sassed me and shook her head.

When someone comes in for a refill, I direct them to the stirring straws so they can stir their own drink.

I worked at a tim hortons for 3 months. It was terrible. I do belive that the tim hortons i worked at had one of the highest quitting and firing pecentage in ontario. One day when i was looking when i worked next there was nothing for me. So i asked the manager why and they said leave me alone im counting the money. I asked about 3 times they never told me. They called me in two weeks later and told me I could quit if I wanted to. Because they wanted to fire me. They told me i wasnt fast enough on the cash. They do not train people and if you need to ask a question no one decides to tell you. I had to carry the trash out after i was done my shift and it took at least 20 mins. I was yelled at for the most stupid things ever. the managers would yell if you didnt take a garbage out that had 2 cans of pop in it. They would yell at you for anything you did wrong. The customers are just as bad. They yell to the wrong people about stuff. Some guy had to reorder his ice cap because it was to watery and it was the machine but he insisted it was me. People bitch most about the coffee though. Honestly the customers are more horrible then any other fast food place i have worked. You barley get breaks as well, they would call you back half way through a break or not give you one. They also had about 5 diffrent ways of doing something and they staff would yell at me about it not being right. Thats my rant for you.

I work at a tims, and the spoon sits in a steel cup of ice, which is changed every two hours. When someone brings in a travel mug, we have to stir it with a straw, not our spoon.

first of all let me tell you i am hooked on timmies must have to start my day awesome coffee but i have a question more like a statement i go to camp usually every weekend and on my way to camp i always pick up coffee to go but it is very hard to drink while driving so i ask for a straw no spillage then what i need from tim hortons is a longer straw because an extra large coffee does not work with a short straw and i am not going to buy 2 lg. coffees when an extra large does the trick so do you think you could come up with a longer straw i dont think i am the only person to use a straw when traveling thanks for your time and consideration to my problem i will keep buying timmies and if need be i will suffer with a large so i can use a short straw once again my thanks
