Tall Ship Chronicles

If you haven’t seen Tall Ship Chronicles on the Life Network, you really should tune in. Produced by Halifax-based Topsail Entertainment, the programme is 16-part documentary about the passage of the Barque Picton Castle around the world, from Lunenburg, NS, through the Panama Canal, the South Sea, Australia, South Africa and back to Lunenburg.

The show is hosted by Andrew Younghusband, actor and sometimes TV reporter; he is affable, an excellent narrator, and because he actually did the voyage as a bona fide crew member (which is the exception rather than the rule in “reality” television), is a compelling watch.

If you don’t pick up Life Network where you are, you can order the show on VHS from the Tall Ship Chronicles website

Try Mike Volpe <mvolpe@topsailentertainment.com>.

I sent him an email inquiring about VHS or DVD copies of Tall Ship Chronicles. It went through, he read it but did not respond.

Top sail Entertainment is likely more interested in their current project the Trailer Park Boys.

Yes I too would LOVE to have a DVD set.

I thought I’d read somewhere that Andrew had moved to Toronto.

Does anyone have the others?

The Picton Castle and the death of Laura Gainey are making news here in Canada again after a year. The first mate in the later half of the “Tall Ship Chronicles”, Michel, was the Captain of that ill fated voyage. The Canadian Transportation Safety Board will be doing their own investigation, sighting problems with the Cook Islands report.

In the light of the interest that has arisen from the recent CBC Fifth Estate episode about the death of Laura Gainey, Topsail Entertainment should surely reconsider releasing a DVD of the Tall Ship Chronicles. I too would love to learn the latest on the gorgeous Lauren Larsen.!!

From singing the song with Maria on-board I believe the words are as above except for: ‘swing her head round into the weather’ but it was five years ago now so I could be wrong. Also I believe it has nothing to do with he real isle of Mingulay (although having visited there too it is prety magical) but rather a mysitcal isle.

was there any news on DVDs of the series or re runs on UK channel? (I have lost my coppies on the mists of time..

Just read all your comments. I saw the series a few back, over a number of winters, whilst living with my husband on our sailing catamaran and crusing around (well, not the world, but) around the Med. We took the boat, or she took us, from the UK to Corfu over 4 years. Amazing time, realisation of an old dream, incredible people and places and adventures. My husband died recently and unexpectedly, so this part of my life is probably over. I still have the boat and love the sea .. so who knows.
The Tall Ship Chronicles is a bitter-sweet memory and I would love a DVD or video too. Any developments on this?
What is Travel Channel video on demand?

I corresponded with Andrew Younghusband recently, asking him if he knew where we could get a copy of the series. Even he doesn’t have it! Nor does he know where to get it, but to let him know if I find it!

Tall Ship Chronicles was a wonderful show with great characters. I especially loved the young rookie sailors but didn’t know, until Laura Gainey’s death, of the dangerous tasks they were assigned — in particular, not having to wear proper life jackets and tethers in a heavy sea. It would have saved Laura Gainey’s life. Has her death impacted the number of applicants or the trips made by the barque? I expect there will be safety changes mandated on board and rightly so.
Love Andrew Younghuusband and am glad that his career is flourishing. Keep safe, all of you.

I called TopsailEntertainment, they said they a phone call once a month for DVD copies but they not think there is enough interest to bother publishing the show in DVD.
Call them up and petition them to offer it via online donwload or DVD.
Perhaps with enough calls we can encourage them to offer it.

I doubt if there will be a sequel because of the accident where a female crew member, Ms Gainey, was washed overboard and killed.

Picton Castle, the ship the series was filmed aboard, will be sailing around the world again in May 2010! No experience is necessary for trainee crew members like Andrew — anyone can sign on for this amazing adventure. This time, the ship’s fifth voyage around the world, will be 14 months long. I sailed as a trainee crew member on the fourth world voyage and it was the most incredible experience of my life. Applications are still being accepted — check out the website at www.picton-castle.com for more details.

The Picton Castle was not a properly crewed ship to sail on, as explained in the Canadian TV documentary, about the death of Laura Gainey when she was washed over board. The Captain of the ship at the time of her death was Michael Vogelsgesang, who failed to accept ultimate responsibility for Laura’s safety due to his incompetence. Some of the crew trainees aboard at the time were threatened and coerced by Vogelsgesang to maintain a ship version of what happened to Laura, versus the truth.
The owner of the ship through his foundation is Captain Dan Moreland. In the TV documentary Moreland evaded the CBC interviewers questions, and to his discredit, showed a lack of class and character unbecoming of a master mariner, by not accepting ultimate responsibility for the lack of safe equipment and training of his so called professional crew.

The ship should be banned from Canadian waters, since her owner is a disgrace to all us Canadian seamen.

Sincerely,

Billy Graham

Greetings. After several years of searching, I have been able to obtain an uncut DVD copy of the entire series. I am posting this to assess what kind of interest it will generate. I cannot promise to make copies because of the potential legal issues involved, but due to the time and effort I have put into tracking down a copy of this series, I am sympathetic to people who have been similarly invested in seeing it again. I am tentatively looking into options for making it available.

Hi all. Haven’t checked back here in a while, sorry. I got the un-cut copy that I have from someone who crewed on the Picton Castle. For privacy reasons I can’t say how I managed to find him. I do not have time to do it right now, but I think what I will ultimately do is to make it available for all on a torrent site. I have no interest in making money from this, and considering how long it took me to find a copy, I am sympathetic to others who would love to see it again. To do this I will need to copy all of the files from the eight (8) DVDs on my computer and keep it running indefinitely to seed the download. When I find time to do that, I will post info for getting the link here. So be patient friends, and if you’re not already familiar, do some research on BitTorrent in the meantime so you’ll know how to download it when the time comes. I realize people might prefer to get hard copies from me directly, but that would involve sending me money, etc., which I’d rather avoid. Cheers.

After watching the series on TV back in 2002, I’ve had countless conversations about it while for years searching everywhere for a dvd or even a vhs of the show. Online, garage sales — everywhere. The search itself has taken on a life of it’s own. Please, I would love a copy.

I’ve been searching for this program for years….truely loved it and actually missed a few episodes. after 10years its about time to see them. Drop me an email, I can help you seed this,I have fibre -op and can upload at 1meg/sec. Lets get this out there and thumb a nose at a selffish producer that is more interested in lining a pocket than satisfying fans.

Hi JWY,
Perhaps you can upload the series to youtube.
A friend who works for CTV looked up the series for me and said it is not available for sale and not likely to be ever.

I would love to show this series over the winter at my sailing club in Scarborough.

Hi tall ship sailing folks. I too would also like a copy of the programmes please. They weren’t aired in the UK — leastways not on any commonly accessible channels. If anyone has an uncut DVD or video tape of the progs. this can be quickly sorted. Seems like there’s enough interest to get this project off the ground to everyone’s satisfaction. BTW search YouTube for the 34 min film fron 1929 of when the 4-masted barque Peking sailed around Cape Horn. Fair winds and take care out there.
