It’s times like these you need the Terms of Union in your pocket…

The CBC is reporting P.E.I. premier wants 2nd ferry for Caribou-Wood Islands run. This is precisely the moment for which I equipped the Premier, upon his assuming office last year, with a pocket-sized handy reference to the Terms of Union by which Prince Edward Island and Canada joined in 1873. It’s time to unfurl the terms.

In 1993, a constitutional amendment replaced this Term.

"That a fixed crossing joining the Island to the mainland may be substituted for the steam service referred to in this Schedule... That, for greater certainty, nothing in this Schedule prevents the imposition of tolls for the use of such a fixed crossing between the Island and the mainland, or the private operation of such a crossing"

Call me a strict Terms of Unionist who feels these modern amendments best ignored.
