CBC Classic Matinees

CBC Television is playing classic movies on Monday afternoons. Today was The Man in the White Suit (one of my all-time favourite movies). Next week is Charade, on April 14 it’s Ruggles of Red Gap and on April 21 it’s Easter Parade. The shows start at 1:00 in the afternoon and run for two hours. Set your PVRs now.

This is a return to CBC Maritimes in the 70’s and 80’s where I watched “The Magnificent Ambersons” by Orsen Wells for the first time.

My introduction to the movies was every Saturday evening. While the sporty families tuned in for HNIC, my family (minus my sporty brothers, in later years) watched Saturday Night at the Movies with then-host Elwy Yost on TV Ontario. That’s probably where I saw The Man in the White Suit, The Lavender Hill Mob, and many others for the first time. It’s ironic that Elwy’s son Graham is now feeding us the next generation of entertainment.

My first comment was incomplete as that was Saturday afternoon — not the new Mondays. Elwy is missed here but I think he appears on the BC version of TVO doing the same gig Sunday nights. It is available on Bell ExpressVu. Shiela Rogers may now regret leaving her position as replacement for Elwy.

I watched Road To Morocco and The Easter Parade and I really enjoyed it. Being a fan of Bing Crosby I was very happy to see one of his movies besides White Christmas. Also I had never seen a Fred Astaire movie and I thought the part when he dances in the toy store was just amazing. To bad that the movies are aired monday afternoons because kids and teens who would love to discover these movies are in school.
