Tim Hortons Responds

Regular readers will recall that I mentioned my surprise that a Tim Hortons Garden Vegetable Sandwich contains 23 g of fat.  I had been in the habit of ordering this sandwich as a “healthy alternative” without thinking about it (doesn’t garden vegetable sound healthly?).  I sent an email to Tim Hortons, and this is what they wrote me back:

Dear Mr. Rukavina,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding your concerns with the Tim Hortons Garden Vegetable Sandwich.

Tim Hortons has created a Nutrition Guide featuring a cross section of our products.  As you have recently viewed this guide electronically on our website, we hope that you have found the nutritional information useful in helping incorporate Tim Hortons products into your lifestyle.

The Garden Vegetable Sandwich is not advertised as a “healthy alternative” sandwich.  It is prepared with Plain Cream Cheese, Tim Hortons Special Dressing, Cucumber, Tomato and Lettuce.  The total fat content of this sandwich is 23 grams.  The areas of the sandwich in which the fat are located is as follows:

    Plain Cream Cheese, 13.0 grams
    Tims Special Dressing, 9.0 grams
    White Country Bun, 0.5 grams

To lower the total fat of this sandwich, request a sandwich with a Light Cream Cheese and no Tims Special Dressing.

Yours truly,
Consumer Nutrition Co-ordinator
Research & Development

That (a) Tim Hortons would respond at all, (b) they would take my request seriously, and (c) that they have a Consumer Nutrition Co-ordinator are all very heartening things.  Kudos to Tim’s for excellent service.

when you purchase your coffee ,they stir
your coffee with a spoon. sits in water all day or even if water is changed once
every hour can this be bacterial causing.

note. someone has a cold or sore throat brings in there plastic cup ask for coffee.that spoon is used once again?

To whom it may concern,

I was very disappointed today with the service that i received at tim hortons, it was very early in the morning approximately 6:15am while i usually take my coffe & bran muffin to go while before i run off to work, however today i was very disappointed in the service that i received from an employee.
First off i usually go through the drive thru and no cars were in front of me, no one was responding through the speaker booth while i was waiting for someone to say something, so i got tired of waiting and said “” Hello “” then a little voice said Can i take your order ? very rudely so then i asked for my order and while i was driving up to the window i heard a comment which i do not want to tell you as i found it very offensive and i know that word is slang as i am old enough to understand what it means as i have heard this name before.
I had my friend with me in my car and she also said to me did i just hear what i think she said and we said ” looks like ” so then as i approached the window the person serving me at that time looked at me with a scowl on her face as if i had been disturbing her chit chat with the other 2 people beside her, very unprofessional as this may sound i received my order without a Thank You, which i always received great service at this location ( jane st/ alliance )JANE PARK PLAZA, to my amazement i even had the common courtesy of thanking this person for upsetting me and heard not one thank you at all.
I have never had a problem with this store i have always had great service and very pleasant people serving however i feel that as a customer i should be treated with respect even though you may not be having a great night or day for that matter.
I was very disappointed and felt that i know i can go to other coffee shops however i really enjoy tim hortons as a whole, today i felt unsure of my self and this doesnt look good for other customers or other people to know . I just thought i would make this comment as i’m not sure of who to contact but i just feel that this person should be spoken to as i feel this person may have been treating other customers the same way which is not right.
P.S. The next time this person decides to make a comment like that she should turn down the speaker on her headset so atleat no one can hear her dont you think ?

Yours Truly very disappointed,
L. Rodney

Kevin,

In response to your stirring the coffee question …

The spoon is kept in a cup with ice and is cleaned regulary throughout the day. This spoon is not used (or should not be used, as stated in the training) for travel mugs, as the staff member is to use a disposable straw to sir the coffee for travel mug refills.

Hope that helps :-)

Alexis, the company searches all coffee producers for our “special” blend. It’s then sent to our “roasters” for processing. Please contact TDL perhaps for some help on your project.

I won a muffin on the roll up the rim contest and I was very disappointed with it. It was very dry and seemed stale. I have eaten a lot of Tim Horton’s muffins and the last 2 that I have had — at 2 different locations — have not tasted fresh. I have always been a really big Tim’s fan and I still love the coffee but I won’t be buying any more muffins for a while.

Re stale muffins:
I don’t know about the muffins, but Tims have recently moved to baking their donuts in Brantford Ont, and shipping them frozen to local stores (you may have noticed the large freezers installed a few months ago at some of the locations), where they are heated up (re-baked?) and served. This could be the reason for the lack of freshness for some of their products.

I was given a BIG TIM for christmas .. I am a horton’s junkie and I buy at least 5 cups a day, this morning i hop in the car with my big tim and head off to Timmy’s. The big tim to fill is $5.79 plus tax ..so it’s $6.50, i asked for my roll up the rim’s and they inform me i get only one. If i was to spend $6.50 on coffee in normal cups, i would have 4 medium roll up the rims, the people behind the counter were very rude and the only explaination i got from them when i asked was they had to watch a video, that does not help me understand why you would treat any customer like that. I work in the service indusrty, and I thought “the customer was always right..” I would like to know why i am not getting the roll up the rims with my big tim …. is it not 6 med coffees in that mug ??? please give me more information thank you …kim (guelph)

I’m trying to confirm or dispel a story that someone rolled up their rim and it said “Please Play Again” (big surprise, eh?). They then continued to roll up the rim around the whole cup. When they rolled up the rim on the back of the cup it showed they had one a car.

This sounds like a silly legend to me. Can anyone confirm or dispel this for me please?

Thanks.

I just heard from a friend whose friend won a truck. When he went to claim it, he found out that it wasn’t a truck he’d won but a one year lease on a truck. He’s now going after Tim Horton’s for false advertising.

FYI… staff at Tim Horton’s are told to onlygive one roll up cup with the Big Tim. It is reinforced by training materials from head office. If you have a problem with the rules, instead of taking it out on the minimum wage counter girl, why not e-mail or phone TDL and ask about the rule??? Just a suggestion as they make the rules.

Ned- ask at your local store if they are throwing out the posters after they are removed… unless someone has already requested them they usually do and will give them away if you want one. If they don’t have anymore, ask for a # for the local marketing dept… they usually keep a bunch of ole promo stuff.

About Tim Hortons:
Has anyone thought about where Tim Hortons coffee comes from and how they get it? Tim Hortons says they are all about coffee, and like to help the individuals in economically unstable communities in Central and South America. They also say that they “provide schools, places of worship, and fields for children to play soccer on” in these economically devastated communities. But, Tim Hortons does not have any proof that they are doing these good things in these countries. There isn’t any documentation on their web site, or in their stores. Tim Hortons’ reasoning for this is that they do not want to advertise all the good things they are doing, “to sell more coffee and donuts”. I think it is strange that Tim Hortons advertises for the good things in Canada and the United States (i.e. Tim Hortons Children Fund) but not the good things they are doing in Central and South America.

If you are curious to find out their reasoning behind this, give them a call toll free at: 1-888-601-1616

i have a couple of things to say about the roll up the rim contest.i was one of the lucky winners in this years contest,i won a bike back in march, here it is may 20,2004 and i still have not recieved my prize as of this date.now the way i see it is that if i won it then i should have gotten it by now,i was also instructed to send my winning tab to the us and i live in cananda,so i not only have not got the bike but i also had so spend $11.60 to submit it ,come to find out i only had to send it to NB and i live in NS would have cost me 57 cents.so just to let people now and the owners of tim hortons that when the next contest comes around i will no longer be playing, what is the sence of playing if you end up with all the hassel and still no prise

Hi, I was an employee or Tim Hortons for 7 years, I was the supervisor then baker then Assistant Manager, I did it all. In December my doctor took me off work for a month. After the month was over I attempted to return to work only to be told that they didn’t want me back. That my being sick for a month was unprofessional. Shortly after that I was then banned from the building. I am asking someone to explain to me how this is right. I will never let my future children or even my childrens children ever work at Tim Hortons becuse I would never want this to happen to them.

I am the lowest lever worker at tim horons and i have been for about a year now, it is NOT a good working enviroment, the staffing sucks an the management is really poor. they have me working split shifts every day, i work a four hour shift and go back five hours later to do another two hour shift, this way they get out of the breaks that they are required to give to us every 5 hours. Most of the employees there are single mothers with kids trying desperatly to keep a job, and if you screw up you do get fired quite quickly. plus the training is all done on CDs and is not hands on most of the time you get thrown out onto the floor. I am quitting this job because i cant handle the management and it’s “open door” policies which include it getting slammed in your face when you ask for better hours or anhything else

I also am a roll up the rim contest winner. Also a lovely mountain bike. And , yes, I also have not received my prize. I also had to send my application via registered mail $$$$$!!! I really hope Tim Hortons is aware of the huge public backlash that the McDonalds corp had after the public found out that the Monopoly contest winnings were rigged. I also find it strange that the only comment timmies has on the lease scandal is “..check our full contest rules.” Typical suit response.

I am currently a manager at a Tim Hortons in Windsor Ont. In response to, “Wesley”, Tim Hortons is an excellent working enviroment. Maybe not at the one you worked for, but me and my staff get along great and we get all of our work down to TDL standards. About the 2 hour shifts, you should be happy that you work for 2hrs and get paid for 4. That is the Law in Canada. Please see the Labor Law of Canada for further details. If i treat my staff with Respect, i will get Respect.

About the car scandal…When you win a SUV, Car or Truck in the Roll Up the Rim contest, you Own it. It is yours. The only restriction (that has anythign to do with one year) is that you are not allowed to sell your won vehicle within one year. You should receive your Shwin Bike within 2 months of winning. I had 3 winners, all receiving their bikes at the end of May. If you have not recieved your bike, you should call your local District Manager, or set up an opointment with the Owner.

My son is an employee at one of the amherstburg branches of Tim Horton’s.I am well aware the same franchisee owns all the branches in AMHERSTUBRG.It is beyond comptempt that any employee anywhere could be treated in this manner. An eight hour shift and two ten minute breaks.IF YOU HAVE TIME TO LEAN YOU HAVE TIME TO CLEAN.The pop machine has been taken out and if you need a cold drink you buy one. That was followed by the sheer nonsence you stand behind the customer and order what you want for your break.YOU TAKE THE CLOCK WITH YOU AS TIME IS TICKING.
My son is his first three months closed the store at eleven and was back at six. That is against the law.We were called night and day when people didn’t show up for a shift. You need to come back in and empty the truck as your job is pending on it.
My whole house last week was woken at five in the morning by the same manageress or her daugther. My son was suppose to work at five pm not am ,but not a word of apology.
I will take this to the big leagues and go to head office where they will hear the kids today are your customers of tomorrow.
You can’t treat them like rubbish.

I,m A Assistant Mgr for A Tim Hortons in the columbus,Ohio area. The Franchise owner is a fucking corporate twit. He has 3 stores already that he can not run. They gave him his 4th a few weeks ago in a different city and they are building a forth for him. He does not care about his employees only his select few. My General Mgr is never at the store to handle anything but he tells us he is here for you. When he is there he is causing nothing but ill will in the store. Leaving notes that are nothing but harrassing to his management staff and his employees. Another thing is that he is changing times cards so as to alter the time that employees have worked. This is highly illegal and I’ve got the copies of the time card records to prove this. It has been going on for over a year. The trouble is I think the General Manager is to stupid to realize that the computer system saves all records. Also if a employee no matter who they are requests a day, he will take away 2 days or just take them off the schedule. Money is always coming up missing from deposits after it leaves the store and the staff and supervisors are blamed when it is clearly happening when the owner or his wife picks it up. The harrassment is to the point that the staff and Management is in a low point. There is so much that can be said but if you go to corporate it is turned around on you or it gets turned on you to where you are the one that is doing this. Tim Hortons has a recruitment and retainment program but they clearly do not read what they write.

I would like to know why Tim Hortons has decided to now brew tea..What was wrong with the tea bags??? If it aint’ broke why fix it..??? I think this is just their way of making more money… and if that is the case then why not charge for the different sizes.. Yeah, that brewed tea is really disgusting. I no longer go to Timmys and I was a regular customer(at least twice a day). Also I didn;t know hot water cost so much…is that the reason for the outrageous increase of 50 percent. Tim Hortons is all about how to put more money into their pockets and that’s the reason for the brewed tea. I know they have lost sales down here in Windsor, Ontario.. anyone I have talked to about the brewed tea and price increase have said they would not return to Tim Hortons….so in the end they lose….

I work for Tim Hortons as assistant manager. I will say that I work there for a job. I am not there because I love it or all that bull ….!!!! I do my job well I like to think, but I am so sick of the constant abuse a lot of the staff has to take. It is so busy all day long, they make min wage and work like dogs. As assistant manager I am to make them “work Harder”. I find it very hard to be forcefull on min wage workers. Sometimes I wish I could tell them to take a half hr break and relax. I wish I could make it more of a fun environment for my staff -but I got to follow Timmys rules. I find it to be a very sad place to work for all those poor min wage workers. And then the owners come in and look around and leave again. Like to see them get out there and be serving customers for 8hrs straight a day with a “timed to the second” break. The work like dogs and they cannot even make it on the wage -slave labour. I do not support how timmys treats any of there employees even though I do it for a pay check! Once I am done school I will never work for timmys again. And not to mention the poor people have to wear those most terrible uniforms -gee, can’t they come up with something a little more in style.

Frusterated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a question. I live in Bathurst NB, I’ve had coffee from as far as Northern Ontario and up to NS. I’ve never realy had any complaints about service or quality. I travel towards South Tetagouch every day and this Tim’s makes the worst coffee. On an average I get 1 good coffee’s out of 10. Now I could go to almost any other Tim’s in Bathurst NB and get a good one,but then I would have to go out of my way I don’t know if their employee’s drink their own coffee but if they do they must have no taste bud’s. I think all the problem is that they don’t hold down the suger button on the automatic dispencer long enough. If someone in the area that own’s one read’s this could you pass it on,

P.S Their is a building with over 100 employee’s and most of them that go their would have the same complaint. I’m not fussy I just want a good 3/3

I’m a supervisor at a Tim Hortons store in a thirsty town in Ontario, and I find it embarassing to work with all but a few of my co-workers. Unfortunately the rest of the thirty or so employees(including management) are completely incompetent. Manners are non-existent. They do not request the total for an order, but instead they demand it.They do not acknowledge the customer politely, but harp at the customer for their order. If a customer is not previously aware of current promotions,or is being dictated to the staff treats them as if they were retarded. Our customers have come to expect substandard service accompanied by rude behaviour and frequently expired product.Of course as a supervisor, customers hold me accountable(which I understand)although I am unable to correct matters since the management behaviour is not that different from that of the regular employees. I was excited to learn about the high level of Tim Hortons standards when I was hired a couple of years ago, however at this store it is more often than not a requirement to NOT follow standards. It is very disappointing to know that regardless of how well a person may adhere to the strict standards, all that will be recognized is how inconvenient it is for them to do so. Our district manager frequents our location almost monthly and I find that even his evaluations are oblivious to the reality of what is really occurring. Uniforms are incomplete, jewellery is beyond what is permissable, hair is usually not contained properly in a hair net, hand washing is almost a miracle, time and temperature logs are rarely recorded(although he gave us a good mark for our freezer log which is clearly a month behind),and the managers and employees argue with customers freely. The drive-thru is more of a social life than an express service. I would find it relieving to have one shift where the managers would help by following the rules and not being poor examples themselves. Gossip about employees,co-managers,or owners with customers and other employees is ridiculous. Yelling at customers is so wrong I can’t convey it. It is extremely disappointing that a store with such potential is managed so poorly that customers and businesses have created their own "pet names" for our particular store and the people within. Customer comments are disposed of rather than considered.Hiring responsible adults for this location has become nearly impossible due to the reputation of this store. Only students apply now because of their classmates.(The job is now playtime)I feel that going to work is now more similar to kindergarten. After much consideration of the managers, supervisor, students, and full time staff that I work with there is no hope.
It would have been wonderful to work for a corporation with competent management and honest policies rather than being degraded on a daily basis by working with these deplorable people that cannot be helped.
Too bad I enjoy this industry!

I’m sick of paying and saying thank you to the person serving me and not getting any response at all. At least grunt… if this is because your job is bad… GET A NEW ONE. They have a high trun over rate to start with. If it gets worst they’ll have to take a look at the staff problems.
